I believe there was a Norman Spradley living in Newburgh back in the 1960s. It might be, probably is, the same family. Cookie, in Florida
Susie, That was a interesting story of Mrs Spradley, I do not know if anyone is researching her, If they are the articles you found would be a nice addendum to their Family Tree .. P.S. Mrs Spradley died in 1934 and is buried next to her late husband Carl at Skelton Cemetery in Warrick Co Indiana Tamara's Kincaid/Vincent/Gish Genealogy http://www.angelfire.com/in/tamaraspage/index.html Genealogists who care will share.
Boonville Enquirer July 30,1926 Mrs Spradley Heroineb Of The Late Tennison Fire (Special Correspondence In Evansville Sunday Courier and Journal) Tennyson,July 24 The heroism of Mrs Iva Spradley, local telephone opperator, in risking her life to save the town during the disastrous fire of several days ago, aside from being a story that will go down into the town"s history, may become also the turning point in the life of the heroine. A widow since the accidental death of her husband, Carl Spradley has supported her two children, Lorene, 15., and Norman Carl Spradley, 13, and kept them in school. Today Mrs Spradley was presented with a tidy purse of money gathered as a token of appreciation by telephone operators at Bonville. Only a day or two ago, school trustees of Skelton township offered her a position as teacher in a rural school. Both of these augur easier times ahead for Mrs Spradley. She has been a telephone operator since her husbands death. "I'm going to use the purse for an educational fund for my children and I certainly want to express my thanks to the Boonville operators for their gift." she said today. Mrs Spradley is proud of her two children. Her daughter is a high school senior and her son is entering his third year in high school this fall. Mrs Spradley's fighting blood is inherited from a proud ancestry, her family tree reveals. Her mother was a Hardin from Hancock county, Kentucky, and her father a Lindsey from Butler county, Kentucky. Judge Caleb J Lindsey of the Warrick county circuit court is her brother. Sherriff Earl Spradley of Warrick county is her brother-in-law. Mrs Spradley's action in summoning the fire departments of Evansville and Huntingburg during the recent fire, was not the only distinguished service in her career. Two years ago, when the Tennyson school caught fire, she summoned a bucket brigade that put out the fire, with the result that very little damage was done, when there might easily have been a loss of life, as well as destruction of the building. Tennyson In Ashes -July 23 1926 Friday Fire almost totally destroyed the buisness section of Tennyson, 10 miles east of Boonville, shortly after noon Monday, with a loss estimated at $60,000,with only a Small part covered by insurance. The conflagration started from an unknown cause in the Josiah McClary produce house and spread rapidly over the Entire business section of the town, destroying thirteen Frame business houses and six residences with their contents. Only three buildings, those of J C Polk, the Tennyson National Bank and W J Wright & Son remained Standing after the fire had been brought under control. But for the heroism of Mrs Iva Spradley, telephone Operator, the entire town would have been wiped out And several residents might have lost their lives, fireman said. Mrs Spradley stayed at her post spreading the alarm among Her townspeople until one side of the building in which The exchange is located had been burned away. When the heat became so intense that she could no longer Remain at the switchboard, she seized a portable telephone Set and ran from the building. She immeadiately reestablished communication with the Outside world by connecting the telephone to a long Distance wire two blocks away.It was she who summoned Fireman from Evansville and Huntingburg. In answer to calls for help an Evansville fire truck arrived At 2:29 o'clock and the Huntingburg department five Minutes later. Lines of hose from wells and ponds soon played on the fire And the town was saved. Cookie, This looks like a good place to start: http://www.genealogy.com/201/lesson9/course9_02.html If this doesn't cover enought of the "intracacies" for you then you might want to look at the Gedcom specifications which you can find at: http://www.tiac.net/users/pmcbride/gedcom/55gctoc.htm And, if you REALLY want to get into it, go to this section of Cyndi's List: http://www.cyndislist.com/software.htm#GEDCOM Good luck Dick Martin in Saratoga County, NY [email protected] wrote: > > Would some kind soul please explain to me where I can find out the > intracacies of GEDCOM? I really seem to've stuck a nerve when I asked if some "kind soul" could help me with GEDCOM. Well, there's an awful lot of 'kind souls' out there and I thank each and every one for their time and concern. There were also a few "ignorant souls," such as myself, who were curious to know more about GEDCOM, too. I'm sending this along for anyone who wants it. Here are some URLs for sites to visit: <http://www.gendex.com/gedcom55/55> <http://www.gedx/default.html> <http://www.genealogy.com/201/lesson9/course9_02.html> <http://www.tiac.net/users/pmcbride/gedcom/55gctoc.htm> <http://www.genroots. org> try Bartholomew Co., IN <http://www.familysearch.org> And these kind words from Cary: "You've gotten some great information from others, but I think you need to remember that GEDCOMs "happen" and that like when you use your washimachine you need to know the basic instructions (how much soap, etc.), you don't need to really know how the machine is configured (electrical systems and all that). A long way of saying , relax and enjoy using your software and don't et overwhelmed." I'm not the best typist in the world, in Florida, or even in my own house, so I hope I haven't made any mistakes where they would count in all the above. Hope this helps some of you and serves as a reference. I love this genealogy! Cookie, in Florida
