I am actually trying to find out if any written records exist for this cemetery - i.e. burial records, lot ownership, lot maps, etc. I have been to the cemetery and know that at least one ancestor, Harvey LARGE, is buried there. He has no tombstone but only a government miltary marker for his Civil War service. I am wondering if his wife or family members might also be buried there in unmarked graves. That is why the actual burial records would be helpful. Also, there is another LARGE family buried there. It is John W.M. LARGE, his wife Susannah, and some of their children. As far as I know, they are not connected to my LARGE family but I find it very interesting that they are buried in the same small cemetery. In fact, Harvey's miltary marker is located just the other side of their tombstones. It might be just coincidental but it would be a very strong coincidence at that. Lot ownership records might shed some light on the situation. You mentioned that you had relatives who lived in the area. Perhaps they might know who is the sexton or caretaker for this cemetery. Sometimes, they retain the cemetery records, if any do exist. Thanks again.
Hello, I have also wondered about any possible connection between John Large and the other Large families. I have the Civil War Pension File of John Wesley Martin Large, who was married to Savannah Jane Weaver. He died in Kankakee Co., IL, but was buried in Buck Creek. He lived Sept. 27, 1830 to Jan. 19, 1915. He enlisted in 1861 at Joliet, IL in Co. I, 20th IL Infantry Regm't. At the time of his enlistment, he was a resident of Middleport, Iroquois County, Illinois. His wife is the daughter of Nancy Shepler and Warren Bailey "Balah" Weaver, of Washington Twp., Tippecanoe Co., IN. Her name, Savannah, is often mistakenly transcribed at "Susannah." John and Savannah were married July 10, 1860 in Transitville, Washington Township, Tippecanoe County. In 1860, 1870 and 1880, John is found in Washington Twp. Of the Tippecanoe County census. They had three children: Minerva J. Large b. April 10, 1861; Artella J. Large b. abt. 1867; and Nevada P. Large b. Oct. 15, 1878. John's wife, Savannah, died Feb. 7, 1928 in Kankakee Co., IL. She was living with her daughter, Minerva Watson in Bradley. Daughter Minerva married George Watson in 1881 in Kankakee Co., IL, so I think that the family moved from Tippecanoe County to IL at about that time, but maintained their connections to family in Tippecanoe County. The Watson family also came from the Buck Creek area of Tippecanoe. In John's pension file, there is a Neighbor's affidavit from Thomas Watson, the father of Minerva Large's husband, George Watson: Thomas Watson, age 70, on Jan. 27, 1893, submitted a "Neighbor's Affidavit" in support of John Large's pension claim. Watson was a resident of Momence, Kankakee County, IL. Watson stated: "... about the year 1866, I renewed my acquaintance with said soldier at Buck Creek, Tippecanoe County, State of Indiana. On or about that date, we both became neighbors, lived for five years within two hundred yards of said claimant, and used to see him every day. [I] worked for him and with him a great many times during this period of five years ... About 1876 or 1877 affiant [i.e. Watson] moved away from said Buck Creek and did not see claimant again until the fall of 1888. Since 1888, I have known him and meet him frequently ..." Thomas Watson is the father of George Watson, who married John's daughter, Minerva. The Thomas Watson family is in the 1880 census for Washington Twp., Tippecanoe Co. A Thomas Watson is mentioned in the Old Settlers article as being an early settler on the Pretty Prairie. I've been interested in John W.M. Large, since I'm quite sure that he is the son of Jesse Large and Mary DeWitt. Jesse Large was an early settler in Washington Twp., Tippecanoe Co. His wife, Mary "Polly" DeWitt, was the daughter of Sarah Burget and Barnett DeWitt. Sarah (Burget) DeWitt left a will in Tippecanoe Co., dated 1848, that mentions a son John Martin (from a previous marriage???), daughter Elizabeth Farmer (don't know her), and grandchildren, John and Permelia Large. I am descended through Sarah Burget's brother, John Burget. Other siblings of John and Sarah Burget moved to Middleport, Iroquois County, IL, where John W.M. Large was living when he enlisted. My John Burget had a business associate, Paschal Watson. There some deeds between the two of them, and they both had a hand in founding the village of Harrisonville in Tippecanoe Co. Do John and Savannah Large have children buried in the Buck Creek Cemetery?? Do you know who's there? Do you see any connections between your Large family and the people I've described? Very interesting ... Madeline Dillman Bechtold
