This he learned by examining the county records to make a transfer of real estate. Forty years ago his mother, whose name was Davis, married a Mr Self, afterward securing a divorce. She was given the custody of the three children, and thought the restoration of her maiden name also changed the children’s names from Self to Davis, and for thirty years they knew no better: Three years ago the supposed Edwin Davis, then residing in Indianapolis, was married to Miss Mary E Hunt, soon moving to Kokomo. They have one child. The discovery that they were married under a wrong name was followed by a remarriage of the couple. Saturday evening they went to the office of Justice DeHaven and were married again, this time under their true name (Lafayette, Indiana newspaper, Monday, January 8, 1900)
