The family name (in Germany) was Saftig. He changed it to Safty somewhere along the line and we would like to know if this was ever done officially, and how to find out. We have been in touch with Saftig's in Germany and have much information about them. My great grandfather's name was Peter Saftig (Safty), he was born March 17, 1872. The story that we always heard was that the ig looked like a y and it was changed as they come to this country. Now we know that the people who actually came to this country (his father) continued to use Saftig and Peter is the only one who changed his name. His parents were Henry Saftig and Catherine Engelhardt (Lentz). Henry came to America (Minnesota) in 1958. What records would there be of his entrance to America and of a name change that may have occured at that time? Any information about how name changes were legally carried out in those days and any documentation would b! e greatly appreciated.
