My what a guy! ------------------------- Funeral of William L. Marcy The Lafayette Daily Courier ,Saturday, July 11, 1857 p2-c3 The funereal obsequies of the lamented at Albany, on Wednesday is described as the most impressing civic and military pageant ever witnessed in that city. The principal buildings were hung with the habiliments of mourning. The Capitol, where the funeral services took place, was decked with the insignia of grief. Directly in front of the Speaker’s stand was the bier upon which the coffin strewn with white flowers, rested: the constitution of the country being placed upon the breast of the illustrations deceased. The procession to the cemetery was preceded by two platoons of uniformed police. Next came the military, nineteen companies, under command of Maj. General Wool, in advance of the hearse, which was drawn by four white horses. The coffin was of fine rosewood. Attached to it was a silver plate with the following inscription: WILLIAM L. MARCY, DIED JULY 4, 1857 Aged 75 years, 5 months and 22 days Following this came the mourners and pall-bearers in carriages. These were followed by carriages containing ex-Presidents Van Buren and Pierce, Gov. King, ex-Governor Hunt, Fish, Seward and Bouck; Hon. Preston King, Hon. N.P. Banks, Senator Beekman and other distinguished persons. These were followed by nine Fireman companies. After these came two companies of Military, the Order of Free Masons, the Order of Odd Fellows, and the civic societies with a large number of citizens on foot. The procession took one hour in passing a given point. There were twenty-five bands of music in it. The day was fine, and everything passed off well.
