    1. [INTIPPEC] Soldiers Home Cemetery Updated
    2. Adina Watkins Dyer
    3. Hi folks, Hope you all are having a wonderful weekend. It's been a busy one for me. I have just completed the Central Section of the Indiana State Soldiers' Home Cemetery and you can now find it online. There are now over 1,200 burials online for this cemetery and there is a photograph for each one. If you find your ancestor listed and would like a photograph of his/her tombstone, just let me know. Please include section and row number. I am currently working on the South Central Section and if the weather cooperates I hope to have it done in a couple of weeks. Since I have listed the burials in row order and not alphabetically, I have created an index to make it easier for you to find whoever you are looking for. WC=West Central section, and C=Central section. http://www.rootsweb.com/~intippec/SHCem.html There are several wives and widows buried in this cemetery and almost all have a death date. To see if there was an obituary for them after 1902, you might want to check the Journal and Courier Index: http://www.rootsweb.com/~intippec/JCIndex.html To obtain copies of applications for residence in the Home, you need to write the Indiana State Archives: http://www.in.gov/icpr/archives/family/fam.html#MS Happy searching. 1. [INTIPPEC] Aaron Marks - Biography
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Clark, Marks, Van Meter Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Hi.2ADI/1733 Message Board Post: Biographical Record and Portrait Album of Tippecanoe County, Indiana, pg. 719 Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago, Illinois, 1888 AARON MARKS, a prosperous farmer and stock-raiser of Tippecanoe County, was born on the farm where he now lives, section 2, Jackson Township, February 2, 1840, his father, Thomas Marks, who is now deceased, being one of the pioneer settlers of the county. Aaron Marks was reared amid the wild surrounding of pioneer life, and has grown up with his native county, witnessing the many changes which have trasformed the wilderness into a well settled community. He remembers when wolves and deer roamed through the unbroken forest, and at one time a wolf was caught in his father's woodpile. He received such education as the schools of his day afforded, which were then taught in rude log cabins, built with puncheon floor and clapboard roof. He has always followed agricultural pursuits in which he has met with excellent success, and is now the owner of 450 acres of choice land. He now devotes his attention to raising and dealing in stock, in connection with his general farming. He was united in marriage August 14, 1861, to Miss Ellen Van Meter, a native of Fountain County, Indiana, and is the youngest in a family of nine children born to William Van Meter. Her father was one of the early settlers of this county. He is now deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Marks have been born eight children, seven of whom are yet living--William T., Franklin H., John L, Carrie, Lee, Jacob D. and James A. Garfield. William, who is a resident of Fountain County, married Rosa Clark, and they have one child, named Ella Belle. John L. is at present attending the Normal College at Danville, Indiana, where he is very proficient in his studies. He makes a specialty of map drawing, and at the fall examination of 1886 he was on of six in a class of sixty-six to receive the grade of 100. Mr. Marks is strongly attached to his home and family, and although he takes an active interest in the welfare of his township and county, he never seeks official honors.

    1. [INTIPPEC] William Halliday - Biography
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Campbell, Halliday, Lake, McCalip, Smith, Timmons, Wolfington Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Hi.2ADI/1732 Message Board Post: Biographical Record and Portrait Album of Tippecanoe County, Indiana, pp. 721-722 Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago, Illinois, 1888 WILLIAM HALLIDAY, an honored and respected citizen of Sheffield Township, was born in Fayette County, Ohio, September 21, 1827, but was reared from infancy in Tippecanoe County, his father, William Halliday, Sr., being one of the early pioneers of the county. Here amid the wild surroundings of pioneer life his boyhood was spent at farm work and in attending the rude log cabin subscription schools of his neighborhood. He has been twice married, the maiden name of his first wife being Lucinda Lake, her father James Lake, being one of Tippecanoe County's pioneers. Mrs. Halliday died December 21, 1852, leaving at her death three children - Albert, now in Boone County, Indiana; Almeda, now Mrs. Wolfinglton, on Boone County, and Mary, now Mrs. Timmons, of Clay County, Nebraska. Mr. Halliday was a second time married, November 11, 1854, to Esther Ann Smith, a daughter of William Smith, who was also a pioneer of this county. Four children were born to this union, of whom but two are living--Lucretia, wife of Anderson Campbell, and Perry, both living in Lauramie Township. The deceased children were named, Mary Etta and William S. Mr. Halliday still lives on the same farm where he grew to manhood, and where many happy years of his life have been spent. His farm consists of eighty acres under a fine state of cultivation, and well improved, his land being underlaid with 500 rods of tile. His house is comfortable and conveniently arranged, and his barn and out-buildings are corresponding good. He is a man plain in manners and speech, firm in his convictions of right and wrong, fair and honorable in all business transactions, and has gained the confidence and esteem of the entire community. He is a member of the United Brethren church. The parents of our subject, William and Catherine (McCalip) Halliday, were born, reared and married in the State of North Carolina. Some years after their marriage they removed to Fayette County, Ohio, the family and household goods being conveyed the entire distance by pack animals. In 1828 they removed from La Fayette (should be Fayette Co., OH?) to Tippecanoe County by team and wagon, and settled in Sheffield Township on the land now occupied by the subject of this sketch. The father had made two trips to the county previous to his settlement here. He died on the old homestead in Sheffield Township in 1841, aged about fifty-five years. His widow survived him many years, dying at the homestead in her eighty-seventh year. They were the parents of eleven children, named as follows: Nancy, Hannah, Rachel, Sarah, John, Samuel, James and Daniel (twins), Simeon and Lena (twins), and William.

    1. [INTIPPEC] IN Naturalization Index bks--anyone have access??
    2. Jacqi Stevens
    3. Does anyone have access to any of the Indiana Naturalization books in Lafayette? If some kind soul could look this up for me, I'd really appreciate it. I am looking for any further information on a James KELLEY who is in the "circ" vol 7, p. 503, showing as arr 1845. When I visited Lafayette last year, I know that one of the libraries has copies of this sort of old naturalization info, as I found a pile of old documents on my other line in Lafayette. If someone could check and see if there is anything else on this KELLEY entry (other than what I already noted), I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks in advance, Jacqi Stevens

    1. [INTIPPEC] James/Mary KELLEY, 1850s, Greenbush Cemetery
    2. Jacqi Stevens
    3. Hello, Thought I'd freshen up my last post on a surname I'm stuck with in Lafayette. I've been looking for any further info on a James KELLEY (may possibly also be spelled KELLY), who was buried in Sept, 1853, at age 60 in Greenbush Cemetery. Along with him were his daughter, Catherine, and also Mary--possibly his wife, but with no dates available on the data. Also buried in the same plot is Mable STEPHENS, d Sept 21, 1870, aged 11 mo 21 days. I have no idea who Mable might be, though it might be one of Catherine's sons' children, as Catherine married a STEVENS and had three sons before she died in the late 1850s. There are some other James KELLEYs in Lafayette in the 1850 census, but they do not appear to be mine. My James K is most likely from Ireland, possibly having arrived within the 10 years or less before his death, I'm guessing. QUESTION: does anyone have access to an index for 1870 census who could check it for an infant Mable STEPHENS for me, checking alternate spelling STEVENS also, and also "Mabel"?? I'd really appreciate it. I'd like to know how this child ties into my family line. If any of these names sound familiar to anyone else on this list, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Ed Keever spent a few days at home last week. Decoration day services were observed last Saturday by the G. A. R. of Dayton. On account of the inclemency of the weather, Mr. Hammon, of Mulberry, delivered his address in the Presbyterian church. The band furnished music for the occasion. The band cleared $23 at their festival. On last Friday, Elmer Johnson, the engineer for the Finch-Freeman elevator company, of Dayton, met with a painful accident and barely escaped being killed while attempting to crawl under the drive wheel on the top of the head by the driver shaft. In the 1870 census in Clinton CO. IN and in the 1900 census in Blair Co, PA my Gr. Grandmother stated that her father was born in Germany and her mother in PA. I knew she was born in Lehigh CO. PA and these were the only Geigers who matched in the 1850 census (the reason I feel that Peter and Sarah Geiger are her parents and her age is right). Then I found them in Carroll CO, IN in the 1860 census - The children were Serine(?),15; Susan and Sarah (mine?) twins, 13; W.P. (Willoughby from 1850 census),10; Joseph, 8; Nathan, 6; M. E. (female), 3, L. P. (Louis from 1880 census), 4/12. If there were more children in the 1870 I haven't found them yet. In the1860 census Peter was 55 and Sarah 32. Carol Hurley

Wells, 28 M carriage maker, OH. Sarah, 27 F IN , Dema, 3 F IL, (this appears to be an error since descendants say she was born in MN) Edwin, 2 M MO (this appears to be an error since his marriage license states that he was born in Cass Co., IL) Martha, 2/12 F MO. Sarah shows up in Chester, Randolph Co., IL , married to Amos D. BARNETT in 1872. Charles would have been my gr grandfather and I'd love to find out what happened to him.
