Hi, Working on my STEVENS line, and trying to find William and Alice STEVENS in the 1920 census, but my index doesn't show them. Wonder if anyone could help me? In the 1900 and 1910 censuses, they are in Wabash twp, West Lafayette, on University Avenue. I know they still lived in Lafayette area in 1920s, because his brother John Kelly STEVENS' obit in 1929 (in Ft Wayne) showed Wm as living in "Lafayette." Wm would have been abt 60 in 1920, his wife Alice 54. Wm d 1939 in Lafayette area, too, I believe (well, at least in Tippecanoe County). The price is $2.00, unless they send the request over to the historical society because they have better copies, and then it is $12.00. From their website: Certified Copy of Marriage License $2.00 Here is the link: http://www.county.tippecanoe.in.us/departments/clerk/Fees.htm I phoned in my request, so I don't know where you would mail it to. Here is the contact information for the Clerk's office: (765) 423-9326 email [email protected] She sent mine to the historical society because they can make better copies and it was $12.00 for two, but you are paying for their research time and not the number of marriage licenses you get. I would email your request because then you have a record of it and can ask her the status easier. My request was lost in 'limbo' for awhile because she got so busy that she never finished typing in the email to the historical society, until I called her. It was a simple mistake and she was very nice and apologetic. If I had noticed the email address, she would not have had to type in my request, she only would have had to forward it. Hope this helps. But sometimes there is other info. The marriage record for James Philips to Jane McCurdy in 1836 did have his father's name. Which was like Christmas morning for me when I found out! That was so much fun, I'm hoping it'll happen again. :)
I'm fairly certain that nothing appears except the bride and groom's name. I have two from Lafayette after these dates (between 1865 - 1875) and that is all that is on them. Not even ages or residence are listed. Surnames: Cochran Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Hi.2ADI/1944 Message Board Post: Joseph Cochran, a farmer of Wea township, was born in Ross County, Ohio, April 8, 1815. His paternal grandfather, who was of Scotch ancestry, moved from Pennsylvania to Kentucky, in Boone’s time, thence to Ohio, where John Cochran, father of Joseph, was reared, and married to Mary Flood, a native of the State of Delaware, and probably of Irish descent. They lived in Ross County until their death, John Cochran dying in 1819, and his wife about 1880 at a very advanced age. Joseph, our subject, was brought up in his native county, and in 1836 immigrated to Tippecanoe County, Indiana, buying a quarter section of land the next year. The land was then partly fenced, and a small portion had been cultivated, and an old brick house was on the premises. In 1848 or ’49, Mr. Cochran put up his present brick residence, and has occupied the place of his first purchase up to the present time, prospering as a well managing farmer should. He has about 460 acres of land in sev! eral tracts. The grounds about the residence are tastefully set off with natural groves, which were mere patches of underbrush when Mr. Cochran first settled here, and all the improvements are of a handsome and substantial character. Having lived here for more than half a century Mr. Cochran is very prominently identified with the growth of the county. He was married in this county in 1838, to Miss Maria Carr, a native of Fayette County, Ohio, and daughter of William and Elizabeth Carr, who settled in Tippecanoe County during its primitive days, on the land adjoining, west of Mr. Cochran’s present farm. They lived in this county until their death. Mrs. Cochran died in 1860, and was buried in the old Thorp graveyard. Of the eleven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Cochran the following seven are living – William, In Wea Township; Martha Jane, wife of Cornelius Callahan, of La Fayette; Jackson and David, residents of Wea Township; Elizabeth; Nettie, wife of Wilbert! Holmes, and Dora, who married Stephen Brady, and resides with her father. The deceased are – Charles, Mary and two who died in infancy unnamed. William was a soldier in the late war, serving in the One Hundred and Fiftieth Indiana Infantry. Since the war Mr. Cochran, the subject of the foregoing biography, has been a Republican. (Benton) Alexander, who were both natives of Lexington, Kentucky, and of Scotch descent. The paternal great-grandfather of our subject was born in Scotland, immigrating to America and settling in Kentucky, where he remained the balance of his days. His son, James W., who was the grandfather of our subject, also lived in Kentucky until his death. The latter was a natural born poet, although he never became famous. James A. Alexander, the father of our subject, was a farmer and trader by occupation. He removed to Indiana in 1837, when he settled in Clinton county, and subsequently settled in Tippecanoe County, where he was extensively engaged in farming and trading in horses and mules. He died in 1866, the mother of our subject surviving until 1877. J. B. Alexander, whose name heads this sketch, was reared to agricultural pursuits on the home far! m in his native county, which he followed until attaining the age of twenty-two years. He received good educational advantages, attending the Commercial College both at Stockwell and Battle Ground in this county. He was engaged in the grocery business for some time, and was also teller in the warehouse of Morey & Van Reene about two and a half years. December 19, 1871, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Morgan, and to them have been born two children, named Luther and Lela. Mr. Alexander served as deputy sheriff under Sheriff S. O. Taylor, and also under his successor, A. F. Manning. In the fall of 1884 he entered the recorder’s office as deputy, which position he yet occupies. He is a member of Friendship Lodge, No. 22, I. O. Listed in the 1930 census of Tippecanoe County is: Carmen (Ripley) Overton, married but no husband listed. Also listed is Carmen's three daughters; Jane Overton, b. 1926; Betty Overton, b. 1927, & Patricia Overton, b. 1928. Listed with Carmen and daughters is lCarmen's mother, Ruth Ripley. Ruth Ripley is the only full sister of my grandfather, Wilbur Wilson Faulkner. I have searched for about 25 years for Ruth (her name is actually Octavia) Faulkner Ripley and her daughter, Carmen. I have so much family history to share with Jane, Betty and Patricia so if anyone knows these ladies or what became of them I would love to meet them or their descendents and share family information, pictures and letters. They are listed in Lafayette in 1920 and in 1930, Carmen Overton was a propriator of a bording house in Lafayette and Ruth Ripley was a cook in a restaurant. It is the last information I have on their lives. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Judy Faulkner Critchlow, Terre Haute, Indiana
