Thanks I tried a couple of photo programs with no luck. -----Original Message----- From: Eloine <eloinepc@comcast.net> To: inswitze@rootsweb.com Sent: Thu, 1 Nov 2007 7:08 pm Subject: [INSWITZE] Switz Newspapers Here is a bit more information that may help someone read these newspapers at: http://www.switzerland.k12.in.us/hs_vevaynewspapers.php They are a bit complicated to get to. The kids at the Switz Co High School did this as a project a few years ago. A very tedious process to scan all of these wonderful newspapers. A big thanks to them! If you can get to the Pacers page - then as an example click on 1840. The next files will be for all of that year with the file names the date of each issue: 18400104 = 1840 Jan 4th. Click on that and the next files are 4 pages of that issue with file names beginning with "R". I right click on a page and SAVE LINK AS and download them to my DOWNLOAD file or you can make a new file to copy them to. I download a month or so at a time then read them later. It helps to have a viewer of some kind as these are graphic files. Any photo program works with varying degrees of print size adjustability. I use a free photo program Irfanview at http://www.irfanview.com/ as I can easily adjust the page/print size and and also highlight and cut clippings and paste them in Word. Each of my WORD files are named with the date of the issue extracted. The PAINT program that comes with most computers brings up a very readable page but not adjustable. Most of what I have clipped pertains to the Civil War and the 3rd IN Cav. but I have clipped many marriages, births and deaths also. Bob, I use Adobe Photoshop. After saving the .tiff file, you can open it in Adobe, zoom, crop out what you want to save (i.e. a particular death notice) and, in some cases, enhance or improve the image.
