    1. Re: [INSWITZE] 1870 Census - SHAFER/SHAVER, WORDEN & REAGAN
    2. Phil, Thanks for the interest in William Shaffer who was 2 years old in Switz. Co., in the 1870 Census living with David and Elizabeth Shaffer. We are pretty sure he was their GRANDSON and was the SON of Mary C. Shaffer who was David and Elizabeth's daughter. First off, as you mentioned, Elizabehth would have been pretty old to have a child. Secondly, in the next census in 1880, he was living in Caldwell Co., MO with Rebecca Shaffer Reagan and her husband William Reagan and listed as "nephew" Rebecca Shaffer was the daughter of David and Elizabeth. William Shaffers death certificate (we haven't found a birth certificate) lists his parents are listed as unknown. But we knew he had a half brother named Amara Warden. We finally got a copy of Amara's death certificate and his mother was listed as Mary Caroline Shaffer. So...we believe that she probably had him out of wedlock and when he was very young they lived with her parents. Then she married Francis M. Worden probably when William was about 5 years old and they went on to have 5 or 6 children, including Amara. William never discussed his parents with his children, probably because he had a pretty unhappy childhood as we know that he moved around from living there with his grandparents, then came to MO with his aunt and uncle Reagan, then also lived for a while with another uncle in MO, Pleasant Shaffer. I think his mother and new stepfather must not have wanted him or he didn't want to live with them? Anyway, thanks for the interest. I am looking a family...DAVID and ELIZABETH SHAFER/SHAVER or SHAFFER should be the parents with teenage children probably and hopefully with a 1 or 2 year old named Bill or William in the household that is their grandchild. If anyone finds them I would love to have all the names in that household with ages and birthplaces. I am also looking for right around them, their daughter Rebecca Shaffer who by 1870 was married to BILL REAGAN...they should be in a household by themselves. Then also, not too far there should be someone named FRANCIS MARION WARDEN or WORDEN born about 1850 so he'd be about 20. He may still live with his parents at this point because at some point after 1870, he marries one of David and Elizabeth Shafer's daughters, Mary Caroline Shafer, who I hope you find in the David Shafer household. 2. Valerie; The borders on these Counties moved and people who lived in them also traveled between them. I checked surrounding Counties and may have found your folks in Ohio County, Randolph Township, Post Office- Rising Sun. Census is available for Switzerland County, in 1860 but I did not find a matching family there. David Shafer age 51 born Virginia? Elizabeth age 45 born Indiana Pleasant age 19, Male born Indiana Rebecca age 17, Female born Indiana Thomas age 16, Male born Indiana Mary C. age 11, Female born Indiana Caroline age 8, Female born Indiana D.E. age 6, Male born Indiana Affen age 1, Male born Indiana My family lived in Switzerland, Ripley, Jefferson, Jennings & Ohio Counties, so I am accustomed to chasing them around that part of the state.
