    1. [INSWITZE] Burial sites for African Americans
    2. patstanleepeople.com
    3. I am new to this list. I'm researching an ancestor, Oscar Leftridge, an African American who lived in Switzerland County from about 1865 until his death in 1888. He was a soldier in the United States Colored Troops,(KY regiment) during the Civil War. I have his military records from the Naional Archives. I would like very much to locate his grave in order to have a marker designating his service to the Union, if there is not already one there. I'm hoping someone on this list may be able to tell me the named of cemeteries where blacks may have been buried in the 1880s, in Switzerland or Ohio County near Rising Sun. Additional information I have on Oscar is that he was working for a farmer by the name of Indianus Humphrey in Patriot the time the 1870 census was taken. Perhaps there are descendants of this family still in the area that may have kept records about the farm that would mention Oscar? By 1880, he was married and continued to live near Patriot. Thanks for any assistance. ________________________________________ PeoplePC Online A better way to Internet http://www.peoplepc.com

    2. That link is set up like it should work I believe it is just broken. I am the County Coordinator in a neighboring County and if it had not been working it should not be on the site at all. You might want to get in touch with the County Coordinator and see if it is just down for the time being. It is sometimes hard to know if you have broken links on a site unless you check them frequently Sheila Kell ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

    3. This is not a specific Switzerland Co. topic but I wanted to pass this info on about the Volunteer Extraction Project being done by LDS together with some State Genealogical Societies. A note yesterday said that they currently have 33,000 volunteers working on it and have done 1.5 million records since Jan 1st. Amazing what a "few" volunteers can accomplish! It is really a neat setup and easy to use. Pass the link on if you know someone who might be interested. It certainly gives a new perspective and appreciation to all those who have done extractions over the years. http://www.familysearchindexing.org/en/index.jsp

    2. Val, I don't have a Riley Chaser. My problem is finding the grave of Indiana Riley Hinman, female, B. abt 1850 to William (b.1808 in England) and Louisa Riley (b. abt 1814 in Indiana). Indiana died 21 May 1881, in Switzerland County, but I can't find her grave. Her husband was Joseph Arnold Hinman. He was born abt 1845 and died from old Civil War injuries on 16 Jul 1877. Their youngest child, Lillie May was placed in the Indiana Soldiers and Orphans home. The home had no further information on Indiana and Joseph. Their other children included, Jodie, Georgianna (my GrGrandmother), Lorenzo D., and Clara Belle. Lillie Mae did marry a Eugene Chase, but no relation to Riley Chaser. Good luck on your search. 2. Judy: I have a RILEY CHASER from Switzerland Co., that I am having problems finding. I noticed you have RILEY as a surname and I wondered how my RILEY CHASER got that for his first name. I know he came to Missouri in the 1860's or 1870's with the SHAFFER and REAGAN families from Switzerland County, but can't ever find him in a census or elsewhere. Tried all variations of spellings as I don't really know if CHASER is a good spelling or not. Any CHASER or anything that might be like that in your family? 2. Hello, Is the Old Bethel Baptist church near the Bethel Methodist Church? I was told that the Bethel Methodist church was turned into a mechanics garage. The Bethel Methodist is pictured at this web site. Scroll down to Bethel Methodist Church. _http://myindianahome.net/gen/switz/photos/index.html_ (http://myindianahome.net/gen/switz/photos/index.html) Can anyone tell me the significance of "Bethel" in both church's names? My Grandmother, Lola, gave me the picture of the Methodist church. I have several relatives in Switzerland County that I am unable to find hide nor hair of: Riley and Hinman. Perhaps they are buried in the Old Bethel Baptist cemetery. Where are the cemetery records located? Thanks so much, Judy ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. 2. I would guess that before 1920 that up to 50 percent of all burials did not have tombstones. It was not just children. I once checked one church record from the early 1900s that noted burials against marked graves in the church cemetery and found a surprising number of adult graves were not marked. -----Original Message----- From: kdavid2410@comcast.net To: inswitze@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, 19 Mar 2007 10:38 AM Subject: Re: [INSWITZE] Spring Branch Cemetery, Switzerland Co. I recently obtained a copy of a death record for the sister of my 2nd great grandfather from the Switzerland Co. Health Department. It shows that Jane Windhauser Andrew (1833-1911) is buried at Spring Branch Cemetery. This cemetery isn't covered in Wanda Morford's book of cemetery inscriptions, but I'm guessing it's located in Craig Twp., as that's where she lived, according to the census reports. I'd like to confirm its location and wonder if this particular cemetery has ever been inventoried as I'm still hunting for the location of her husband's burial (William Andrew, d. 1880-1900).
