You may call the Switz. Cty. Public Library (Thursday is probably best), or the Switz. Cty. Historical Society (daily & weekends 12 to 4) and ask them to check for you in the Wanda Morford Cemetery Inscriptions. Library 812-427-3363 Society 812-427-3560 There is a listing in that book and it isn't very long so if you have the names you want, they can probably answer over the phone. I would suggest FindAGrave.com. It is free and it works very easily. Check it out. I avoid Photoshop because it has a habit of thinking it owns all the ports on the computer and won't let anything else onto the USB ports (at least the starter edition does and I'm not willing to pay for the full thing). I've installed it twice and removed it twice for that reason. I suppose if Microsoft makes virtualization available on PCs I can create a couple of machines on my PC and run Photo shop where it won' bother anything. -----Original Message----- From: Kay Davidson <kdavid2410@comcast.net> To: inswitze@rootsweb.com Sent: Sun, 4 Nov 2007 7:07 am Subject: Re: [INSWITZE] Switz Newspapers Bob, I use Adobe Photoshop. It depends very much on the year, owner and number of pages. Before 1880, they are rarely on the front page. As time advance, and depending on the prominence of the person, these became more common. But for most people, obituaries longer than two paragraphs were rare and it was not common to name the parents in most until after 1900, often after 1910. Births were rarely announced, marriages and deaths more often. Full obituaries are rare before about 1890. Usually it's just age, name, date and location. Death are often in two places. Under a heading for deaths and in the local news items from communities. So you have to read all of these. Marriages are also often under a marriage headline, but not always. There were some changes in owners and they did things differently. As the 1800s went on, there were more pages, so the locations of the local news changed. In later years, there were often news items on two pages, and an increasing amount on the front. In many ways, local news increased during the Civil War. I think it was because so many people were away from home and people wanted to hear about them. That's just a conjecture. -----Original Message----- From: Deblack71@aol.com To: inswitze@rootsweb.com Sent: Fri, 2 Nov 2007 9:10 am Subject: Re: [INSWITZE] Early Switzerland Co. newspapers - digitized images does anyone know which pages ususally listed the annoucements: birth marriage death obituary thank you - DeAnne ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to INSWITZE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ________________________________________________________________________ Email and AIM finally together. Usually, I download them then open them. I'm not sure they open from the Web site. They open up in most of the graphics packages. I also don't th ink you can print them in their real sizes. They tend to print in the size of the file, which means you need a magnifying glass I someone knows of a package that lets the user blow them up to a bigger size and print them in that size, I would love to know it. I end up with a ton of files downloaded, then go back and open them individually and read them. -----Original Message----- From: Deblack71@aol.com To: inswitze@rootsweb.com Sent: Wed, 31 Oct 2007 11:19 am Subject: Re: [INSWITZE] Early Switzerland Co. newspapers - digitized images having trouble unload the files to read - click 1840 and then a file on next page and nothing ???????????? how do I get the files to read ???????????? Yes, it's very tedious but can result in BIG rewards, in particular reports of deaths in the years prior to deaths being recorded by the county. Reading the articles about the major floods was most interesting - found reports of ancestors houses being swept away. ----- Original Message ----- From: <bobwscott@aol.com> To: <inswitze@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 28, 2007 10:09 PM Subject: Re: [INSWITZE] Early Switzerland Co. newspapers - digitized images > > There has never been an index that I am aware of. > > The only index? has been by year. I just tried it and it works fine for me. As an example: Click or paste the link in your browser. http://www.switzerland.k12.in.us/hs_vevaynewspapers.php When a new window opens left click on a date. then left click on a number. Now left click on one of the "Tif files." The page should open. If you want you can save the image for better viewing ny right clicking on the "Tif file," (R006P005 - (TIF Image File)) not the image. When the box opens, left click on "save link as." Now go to where you saved the file and open it. Enlarge it for eaiser viewing. Hope this helps. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Deblack71@aol.com> To: <inswitze@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 31, 2007 7:19 AM Subject: Re: [INSWITZE] Early Switzerland Co. newspapers - digitized images > having trouble unload the files to read - click 1840 and then a file on next > page and nothing ???????????? > how do I get the files to read ???????????? > DeAnne > > > > ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to INSWITZE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
There has never been an index that I am aware of. The only index? has been by year. You have to go through the pages one by one. The only help I can give is that you can begin to learn which pages have local news and which don't. This remains fairly constant except when the number of pages in the average issue increase and that it's amattern of picking up a new pattern. So in a four-page issue, you might find a little news on page 1, none on 2 and 3, and most of the local items on 4. In many cases, the national news will consume one page and perhaps what we might call magazine-style articles on another and the pattern is generally unvarying, except in special issues. I've spent a lot of time going page by page, year by year. So I sympathize. What is the link that you can get to the papers. I could not get that to work for me. Thanks ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
The lead-in page is through Hoosier Heritage at Hoosier.heritage.net. There's information on many other sites through this gateway. The actually page for the newspapers, indexed by years is http://www.switzerland.k12.in.us/hs_vevaynewspapers.php -----Original Message----- From: Kay Davidson <kdavid2410@comcast.net> To: Switzerland Co.
