I want to look at the November 1876 issues of the Vevay Democrat. The IN State Library has a full set of the Vevay Reveille newspaper (microfilm) but just "scattered issues" of the Democrat. Does anyone on the list know where I might find issues of the Democrat that far back? Thanks. --Phil Jones <philjones@indy.rr.com>
Ellyn (and others)-- The minutes of the Co Bd of Commissioners are safe and clean in the Auditor's office. Thanks. Based on what I found there, the Commissioners spent a good bit of time on the poor farm and pauper relief in the county. Fortunately the records are indexed, so that made it easier to find many of the references to the poor farm and paupers. I found the Poor Farm on an 1883 Craig Twp. plat map -- 165-acre plot between Long Run Rd. and Highway 129. Looks like Roberts Rd runs into the property off 129. I couldn't find when it was first opened, but from 1876 to 1881 (my area of interest) Matthew Worstell was the Supt. He was paid $70 per year for each resident. In the Sept - Oct - Nov. quarter of 1878 there were 31 full-time and 11 part-time paupers at the poor farm. (Book H p.459) That was the only listing I found. In the Commissioners Book I, p. 469ff, there's a detailed contract for everything the Supt. was expected to do. This was for 1883-1885. I found much of what I was looking for, but many times the minutes just listed detailed expense items, with no names. I'll bet the Supt. kept records -- he would have needed them to back up his requests for reimbursement from the Commissioners. Wonder where they might be? Anyway -- thanks for pointing me to the Minutes. --Phil Jones
Ardath: Your are probably talking about what has been called the County Poor Farm. The one I am thinking about is in Craig Township on a road that runs west off of 129. G. Roberts Rd. I referenced the cemetery in my cemetery book, but was unable to find any information. The poor farm has intrigued and has come up in various forms lately indicating to me that it is time to do some serious research on the subject. Haven't gotten to it yet though. Does this help any? Thanks for all the help - it's been invaluable. With what you've provided and the help of some other "volunteers", I've managed to find a couple of the Culp children. You found Bruce and Rachel living with Charles Lee in 1870 - turns out, that Charles was actually their Brother In Law. In the marriage index, he's listed as Charles Ice md to Mary Culp - but by tracking census, it turns out his name was actually Charles W. Lee. He and Mary were living in Switzerland Co by 1900. Bruce Culp died in IL and is buried in Danville, Vermilion Co., IL. On Jerusha Culp Irby - I managed to locate her living with the Lee's in 1880, but the children seem to have disappeared. I lose Jerusha again after this time. Again, thanks for all your help, not to mention all the other kind "volunteers" Gayle ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karen Clanin" <kclanin@fix.net> To: <INSWITZE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 05, 2006 6:10 PM Subject: [INSWITZE] culp > > assume you got the info from 1860 census which is what i found. > > i did find a marriage for jacob and sarah: 9-12-1834 in Ohio co, indiana > > in 1870 bruce and rachel are in the home of charles and letitia Lee in > Jefferson, Switzerland co. > > bruce is in 1900 census in statley, brown co, MN age 42, farm labor, > married 10 years, born 5-1857 IN > wife minnie age 32, born 2-1868 in IL, had 3 children w/1living, parents > born OH > son Pauly age 9, born 5-1891 in IL > > in 1920 bruce age 61 and minnie age 51 are in Pigeon Grove, Iroquois Co, > IL > with them is Joseph Babb age 80 listed as father -in-law > > did not find a bruce the right age in 1930 > > in 1850 the family was in Division 2, Ohio co, Indiana, wife sarah listed > as Sally (nickname for Sarah) > > i found jerusha listed as wife in death of husband john m. irby, which > also gives marriage date. > Name: John M Irby > Spouse: Jerusha Culp > Parents: John Andrew Irby , Phoebe Dewitt > Birth Place: Switzerland, Cotton Twp, IN > Birth Date: 15 April 1840 > Marriage Date: 15 April 1861 > Death Date: 17 March 1871 > > Name: Jerusha Culp > Spouse Name: John M. The Historical Museum is from what I read being remodeled or spruced up. Repairs were needed along time ago to the floors and walls. They are installing air conditioning, insulation, storm windows, carpeting and painting. They will have new displays for the artifacts. They have antiques from the Ogle Haus that were donated by the Vevay/ Switzerland County Foundation. For those that have never been, they do have some family files and family bibles. I can't tell you the names though. They had some tax books I saw at one of my visits. They have some military photos and lots of interesting antiques. Lori
