Lazarus Altfeld, proprietor of the Altfeld Drug Company of South Bend, is a veteran of the World war, having served in the United States Navy during that great struggle. Mr. Altfeld was born on September 25, 1896 at South Bend, the son of Max E. and Mary (Breger) Altfeld, both natives of Russia. They came separately to the United States and here were married, the ceremony having been performed at Baltimore, where the father was a rabbi in the Jewish Orthodox Church. They then moved to Columbus, Ohio, where they remained six years, and then in 1895 moved to South Bend, where they are now living. They are the parents of seven children, all living: Julius, with the Wherret & Altfeld Furniture Company; Mandel, with the M. Altfeld Co., wholesale jewelers located in the Citizens Bank Building; and Lazarus being the three who are in business in South Bend. Lazarus Altfeld was educated in the public schools of South Bend, attending the high school, and was graduated from ! Green's School of Pharmacy at Indianapolis in 1915. In 1918, he entered the Medical Department ofthe United States Navy, was stationed for six months at the Great Lakes Training Station at Great Lakes, Illinois, and was then assiged to service on the sea. He made six trips to France on the U. S. S. Huron, and two voyages on the U. S. S. Callas, a total of sixteen ocean voyages. His service covered a period of eighteen months, and after receiving his honorable discharge from the service, he came to South Bend and became employed with the Central Drug Store. Before entering the Navy, he had been employed with Ralph Kuss, Ira White and Otto Bastian in the drug stores owned by those gentlemen. On October 28, 1920 Mr. Altfeld went into business for himself at No. 524 West Division street in this city, and is doing remarkably well in this venture. He is a member of the B'nai B'rith at South Bend and attends the Jewish Church, in both of which he is a conscientious worker.
