Greetings, I'm researching the surname ADER of South Bend from the late 1890's to the present. According to ship manifests, several Ader families lived on the following streets at the turn of the last century-W. Division, Pine, Thomas, Perken (?), Kendall, Elm and Chapin. These Ader individuals/families came from Kapuvar and Gartha, Gyor-Moson-Sopron province, Hungary. Of most interest is my great grandfather, Frank (Ferencz) Ader, who, according to the ship manifest, was 30yrs old, married, arrived Philadelphia on 8 Feb. 1896, going to his father, a "John" (difficult to read) Ader at 1210 W. Division St. Church records show Frank's father to be Istvan (Stephen?), not John (Janos?). This would indicate that my gg grandfather was in the U.S., which would be a great surprise to our family. Any tips on researching Hungarian immigrants to South Bend would be most appreciated. Thank you, Michele Freeland Burke, Virginia
Hi Michele! I looked through Eisen's newspaper index for 1831-1912 and my copy of one of the two county histories that was published and didn't see the name Ader anywhere. Your best bet would be to contact Bill Minish of the South Bend Area Genealogical Society. If you would like his e-mail address, I'll gladly give it to you off list. Hope this helps!
