Submitted by Georgia Gill-Elkins South Bend Tribune Aug 27, 1936 p. 1 Worker Killed At Bottle Neck Clifford Burger Falls 20 feet Off Forms Clifford Burger, aged 54, of 406 South Lafayette Boulevard, a carpenter employed on the bottle neck viaduct construction over North Michigan Street, was fatally injured this morning when he lost his balance and fell 20 feet into an excavation. Although no one witnessed the accident Coroner A. L. Knapp said it was evident the man lost his balance. He toppled on the outside of the concrete forms on which he was working into the excavation around them. He was taken to Epworth hospital in the city ambulance at 8:30 o'clock and died an hour later. The coroner said Mr. Burger suffered a skull fracture and a broken neck. He is survived by a widow. The body will be taken to South Haven, Mich. his former home, for burial.
