    3. From Rick B Wednesday, February 8, 2006 "The South Bend Weekly Tribune", Saturday, October 2, 1897, page 5 SOCIETY While the social season has not fairly arrived still the women's clubs and the mixed societies are beginning to take the initiative in regular weekly gatherings or occasional meetings. The pleasure of these sessions, if a forerunner of the enjoyment of the winter, promies that that the season will be one of unusual pleasantness. The literary clubs have nearly all resumed their work for the winter with indications of a gratifying term of study and labor. Otherwise there are not many set events for the season. It is probable that the social club season in South Bend will be a fairly active one. Such prophecy may prove erroneous but it is believed that the presence of better times in the business world has led many members of these social bodies to expect some good programmes of entertainments from the committees assigned to that duty. The entertainment committee of the Commercial-Athletic has not made public any plans it may have for the winter. Members are said to be very anxious that a series of enjoyable events and novelties be arranged. Es- to see the schedule include a fews hops to see the schedule to see a few hops and other strictly social functions. [This sentence as printed in the newspaper.] The athletic end of the season will, of course, not be neglected. The Indiana club, also, has not publicly stated its plans for the season. It will soon move from its present spacious apartments at Michigan and Wayne streets to its larger and more complete home on South M! ain street. It is understood to be in the minds of some of the leading members to have a farewell party for members before giving up the old home. What will be done to initiate the new is not known but the Indiana club is known to always do things properly so some function introducing the beautiful new club apartments is a probability.

    1. Biography: Max Adler

    3. From Rick B Tuesday, February 7, 2006 HISTORY OF INDIANA FROM ITS EXPLORATION TO 1922 BY LOGAN ESAREY, Ph. D., ALSO AN ACCOUNT OF ST. JOSEPH COUNTY FROM ITS ORGANIZATION EDITED BY JOHN B. STOLL (Volume III). "BIOGRAPHICAL", published in Dayton, Ohio by Dayton Historical Publishing Co., 1923, page 186-187. Max Adler, who is prominently identified with the merchantile interests of South Bend as president and treasurer of the Max Adler Company, is one of the business men of the St. Jospeh county seat who has been the architect of his own fortunes and who has risen from small beginnings to position and business preeminence. Mr. Adler was born in Germany, in 1874, and was there given the rudiments of an educational training. When he was fourteen years of age he was brought this country to enjoy the greater advantages and opportunities offered to aspiring youths of all lands, and immediately secured a position with relatives, the Adler Brothers, in the capacity of clerk. During the following two decades Mr. Adler worked his way slowly but surely up the ladder. He was industrious and faithful and as he passed through each stage of the industry he familiarized himself thoroughly with its every detail. In 1908 he was ready to embark in business in a venture of his own, and a! ccordingly, in partnership with Gus Peterson, opened a modest establishment at No. 108 West Washington Street. The partnership continued until 1913, when it was mutually dissolved, and in the following year Mr. Adler founded the firm of Max Adler Company, of which he has since been president and treasurer, Louis E. Rose being the secretary. The building occupied by his modern merchantile establishment, located at Nos. 102 and 104 South Michigan Street, is up-to-date in all appointments, and is 165X40 feet in its dimensions, there being three stories. The business has been enlarged to substantial proportions through a business policy of honorable dealing and fair play, and Mr. Adler's well-known integrity has had much to do with the prosperity of the enterprise. He belongs to several civic bodies and to a number of fraternal and social orgaizations, while his business connections are numerous. He has not sought public office. In 1911 Mr. Adler was united in marriage with Miss Lillian Strauss, of Buffalo, New York, and to this union there have been born two daughters: Mildred and Ruth.

    1. Re: [INSTJOSE] Lydia Davis
    2. Thank you! This is very, very interesting! "My" Lydia Jane Davis was b. 1844, but she may have been the niece of one of the Annis family you speak of. This Davis family has become a tantalizing brick wall. Because the surname is so prolific, and because I can't find her either in the 1850 or 1860 censes for St. Joseph or Marshall counties, there's no way I have been able to acertain her parents' names with any confidence. However, I do have a honeymoon letter written by my g-grandfather, who married Lydia's daughter, Lola Jackson Nitcher. In March 1885, he and Lola had eloped to Ohio, and were staying for a few days at the home of some of the Davis family, probably a brother of Lydia Jane---because the writer, Elmer Irvin, says, "I was welcomed as a new nephew". That was in McComb, Hancock County Ohio. Plus, my mother always said her grandmother's family was originally from Ohio---although they may have come from New York a few years before! Since that part of Hancock County is not very populated, I reviewed the censes of 1880 and 1870, pretty sure I could locate that Davis family. But dang it, even THAT rural township had several Davises in it! I s'pose what I'll have to do next is research the real estate records of that township, because I know this particular Davis lived right in McComb, right in the town. For censes after 1900, the address of the subject is almost always reported, but since there was no RFD (Rural Free Delivery) of the mail prior to about 1900, in earlier censes there was no reporting of house numbers. By obtaining the brother's name, I might be able to find the family in an earlier census, in either Ohio or Indiana. That was my plan. Oops--I just remembered something. In the 1880 census, Lydia Jane (Davis) Irvin is listed as being b. IN, and parents were b. PA and PA (so the Ohio sojourn was short-lived). That also may shoot down the New York State connection---but thanks for posting it, because it contributes to the process of elimination. I know whay you may thinking now. Why don't I simply go to the 1880 Hancock Co. census and search for any Davis, of a similar age to Lydia, and with parents b. in Pennsylvania? Hah! In Hancock Co., in 1880, there are SEVERAL! ARRGGGGGHHH! ! Thanks so much for your thoughtful reply. I'm going to look into the Annis family in case something else turns up. Besides, I have a special interest in, one day, "mapping" all of the families in North Liberty, Indiana, and nearby villages. Ultimately, I think many of us are related. ---Bob Robertson In a message dated 2/3/2006 8:33:47 PM Pacific Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I have a Lydia Davis in my database, born to Ezra and Lucia (Brunson) Davis about 1818. This was found in the book by Arthur Annis, James W. Annis and his Descendants, (1968).. In 1810 Ezra, wife and six children were living in New York state. Ezra's oldest daughter Elizabeth married James Washington Annis, who did live in St. Joseph county, Indiana, Lakeville town or township.

I'm sure he was of this family. ---Bob Robertson Napa Valley, California

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ei.2ADI/2339.3.1 Message Board Post: Thanks very much, Irvin! I may take you up on your offer to send me the death notice for Lydia, and the obit for her daughter Anna. I am especially interested in learning the names of Lydia's parents (they were Davis). The other Nitchers you mention are known to me. Charles B. Nitcher was a son of Lydia Jane. He was also known as "Bert", so those two names refer to one individual. Bert married one Clara M. Sheets in 1902 (I have the information from Indiana marriages online, at Ancestry.com, but of course, I'd love to see the marriage certificate sometime. "Uncle Bert and Aunt Clara" were what my mother called them, and she used to spend summers away from South Bend, down in North Liberty where they lived. They were schoolteachers, and had no children. The other Nitchers you mention, Simon, George, etc., are from the same family, but were cousins to "my" Nitchers. I'm surprised that you have info. on them, because they moved on to Kansas and parts West, during the 19th and the early 20th century. Nitcher is a rather rare surname, and fortunately, there are a number of researchers around the country who would love and appreciate any material about George Archer Nitcher, Simon Nitcher and his wife Caroline Gensinger, etc. I correspond with one Nitcher, who is 98 years old and whose family were pioneers in Idaho! She was perhaps the first to compile a comprehensive history of this family, and she's been doing it for maybe 50 years. She would love to read anything you can report about the Nitchers of St. Joseph County. St. Joseph and Marshall Counties were the launching place for an amazing family saga, which I'll share with anyone who cares to write me personally. (Franka May sent me the memoirs of her pioneer father, as dictated to her many years ago,and the story is full of exploits involving life on the plains, from the 1850s and later. Frank James (brother of Jesse) is mentioned, as is the brother of Wild Bill Hickock, and an encounter with the Indians. Fascinating reading!) Meanwhile, thanks, Irvin! I hope I can reciprocate the favor sometime. ---Bob Robertson Napa Valley, California
