    1. Article: Memorial to Mr. Alvin S. Dunbar, October 2, 1897
    2. Richard Berkheiser
    3. From Rick B Tuesday, February 14, 2006 "The South Bend Weekly Tribune", Saturday, October 2, 1897, page 5 BAR PAID TRIBUTE. MEMORIAL TO LATE A. S. DUNBAR. Usual Order of Business Varied in the St. Joseph Circuit Court---Full Text of the Report of the Committee on Resolutions. The usual order of business in the circuit court was interrupted for a few minutes Tuesday morning, while Andrew Anderson submitted a memorial and resolutions on the death of Mr. Alvin S. Dunbar prepared by a committee appointed by the St. Joseph County Bar association. This committee was composed of Hon. Andrew Anderson, chairman, Mr. Jonathan P. Creed, Hon. George Ford, Mr. John E. Fisher, Mr. A. L. Brick and Judge Lucius Hubbard. After reading the memorial and resolutions Mr. Anderson moved that they be spread upon the records of the court and that a copy be presented to the family of the deceased. The tribute paid by the bar association is as follows: Alvin S. Dunbar was born in North Sheldon, New York, on the 11th day of May, 1827. In his youth he bcame a resident of Michigan, and when about 18 years of age took up his abode at South Bend. He afterwards commenced the study of law, and was admitted to the bar of St. Joseph county on April 3, 1852, and from that time until his death, on the 22d day of September, 1897, except only when disabled by sickness, was steadily engaged in the practice of his profession. He was born, he lived and died. Such is the history of every man, but much more is to be said of our departed brother. He was born in lowly circumstances. He had only a common school education. He was hampered by poverty. He had no influential friends to aid him in the battle of life, and it was to his own resolution and perseverance that he made his life a success and died mourned by all who knew him. He was a careful, assiduous, painstaking lawyer; to a great extent engaged in the management of estates, guardianships and other trusts. All who had business relations with him trusted him, and he was never known to betray their confidence. He was upright, honest, careful and eminently conscientious and just. He was a man of deep religious convictions, and for a generation was a consistent and devoted member of one of our prominent churches. As a result of his industry he provided well for his growing family, and secured a competence for himself. He was frugal, plain and economical in his personal habits, but was liberal in support of the benevolent and religious associations wit! h which he was connected. He was the oldest member of our bar, and had been a practitioneer thereat for a longer period of time than any of his associates. He suffered from a depressing and weakening malady for more than 20 years, but bore his ailment patiently and with resignation, looking forward without fear to the coming of death. Having lived his three score and ten years he has returned to the Father; leaving behind him nothing but pleasant memories with those who knew him. Therefore it is Resolved, By the bar of St. Joseph county, that in the death of Alvin S. Dunbar, we have lost a man who was a good citizen, a consistent christian and an honor to his profession. Resolved, That we express to his family our sympathy in their irreparable loss, and that a copy of these resolutions be transmitted to them. Resolved, That this memorial be presented to the St. Joseph circuit court to be entered on the records thereof.

    1. John Michael Krzyzewski of South Bend Indiana killed WWII
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Krzyzewski Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ei.2ADI/2347 Message Board Post: Seaman Second Class John Michael Krzyzewski of South Bend, Indiana and the United States Navy Reserve was killed July 30, 1945, as the USS Indianapolis was sunk by the enemy in World War II. The Indianapolis was in the South Pacific near the Philippines when it went down. His status is missing or buried at sea and his name is honored on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. We have found the following reference at the Indiana State Library website; World War II database. We do not have the information because we do not have access to the microfilms here in the Philippines but we are hoping for some help from our posting. Our goal is to find the families of Indiana servicemen and present them with free photographs of their loved one’s grave sites or their names as they appear on the “Tablets”. This information will increase our chances of finding the families. Please help us! References: Indianapolis Times September 11, 1945 Page 7, Column 5 Hello, I am a retired American veteran residing in the Philippines with my Filipino wife. A year ago we visited the memorial as visitors but came home with a mission in our hearts. As we gazed over the beautifully manicured acres and the 17,202 American graves, it was obvious only a few families had ever visited their graves. I stepped into the soft grass and focused my camera on one of the white crosses, a grave of an Ohio soldier. A strange calmness was in the air as I walked a few more steps and a cross of an Indiana soldier lay square in my path. The letters of the inscription on the marker was bolder than ever, here lay a soldier from my home state. At that moment a quiet brainstorm aroused my humble thoughts. I wondered if I could locate any of the families of these men. My stride became more defined and within a few moments I had located and photographed eight more graves. Since those gut-wrenching but touching moments we have energized our efforts in finding the families of these American men from Indiana. We have located well over 100 and have delivered the FREE photographs to them via email. Please visit our website and see the men we have honored and the families we have assisted in finding a more genuine closure of a horrible tragedy. http://fizkid.tripod.com/ Our success in finding the families was the result of journalists, amateur genealogists, historians, historical societies, librarians and lots of wonderful Hoosiers and those with Indiana ties across America. During our search we have also reached families from other states as well and have filled special requests for photos from the Manila American Cemetery. We presently have photographed only the graves of the Indiana soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen; however we have photographed all of the names that are engraved on the "Tablets of the Missing". We offer them free of charge to anyone who asks. We ask for your help in finding their families. We understand this is a genealogy board but we do not need immediate genealogy in that form, we need leads to find the families. Please become one of our special volunteers today and find the family of an Indiana serviceman from near your home. A list of the men from your Indiana county is available, free and all you must do is request it. In compliance with a wish he made some time ago, each gentleman had a package of smoking tobacco, over 17 pounds in all. The ladies furnished the supper. Miss Clara Harris, daughter of Mrs. Haight, whose birthday will be on Sept. 30, also received several handsome presents. The evening was happily spent.

    1. Homer Leroy Smith of St Joseph Co or Knox Co Killed WWII
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Smith Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ei.2ADI/2344 Message Board Post: Homer Leroy Smith of Mishawaka, Indiana in St. Joseph County or perhaps Knox County Indiana was killed July 30, 1945, serving on the USS Indianapolis in World War II. He is missing or buried at sea and his name is honored on the Tablets of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines We have found the following reference at the Indiana State Library website; World War II database. We do not have the information because we do not have access to the microfilms here in the Philippines but we are hoping for some help from our posting. Our goal is to find the families of Indiana servicemen and present them with free photographs of their loved one’s grave sites and names as they appear on the “Tablets”. This information will increase our chances of finding the families. Please help us! Reference: Indianapolis Times October 8, 1945 Casualty Page 5, Column 5 Hello, I am a retired American veteran residing in the Philippines with my Filipino wife. Dave and Apple Dwiggins San Pablo City, Philippines

    1. Article: When Time Runs Out
    2. Richard Berkheiser
    3. Hi everyone! Here's an interesting article from the latest Rootsweb Review on preserving family memories on film. I'm posting this to all three of my lists so my apologies if some of you see this twice. Rick B List Administrator ==================== WHEN TIME RUNS OUT By Maxwell Russell My ex-wife, mother of our three children, died on 13 April 13, 2005. She was diagnosed and operated on for a stage four malignant brain tumor at the end of 2004, and it took less than five months for the cancer to do its work. For many years, I wanted her and our children to review and narrate the home movies that we took of the kids as they were growing up, but we never got around to it. I wanted all of us to sit around and comment on these movies into a tape recorder and thereby be able to save the information, times and places, names and faces. We waited too long. We began taking movies of the kids in 1958, when our oldest daughter was just a toddler. In those days, the best equipment you could get was a standard 8mm movie camera that was only capable of silent pictures. As the years went by, we added many reels of film to our collection and had a pretty good documentation of all three children as they grew up. Many times, I wished that there was a way to add sound and narrate the movies that we had taken. At one time my son even bought the equipment to re-photograph the movies with his VHS video camera to sort of modernize them, but he just never got the time to do it. After his mother got sick, I instructed him to take all the films down to a nearby store (various photo shops and big box storesoffer this service) and have them sent away to be transferred to DVDs. Just so you know, it cost $430 and I ended up with three full-length DVDs, which were professionally recorded and had background music added to them. He then mailed them to his mother so that she could at least view the DVDs in her last months. Later, I took the DVDs and, with the help of my computer and several movie software programs, I was able to remove the background music, edit out the bad spots, move things around, cleanup dark or light scenes, narrate all the movies, and add my own background music. I really got creative with the music such as using the theme from "Jaws" to accompany the kids splashing around in the backyard swimming pool. I wasn't able to recognize all of the people or all the places that were in the movies, but I documented everything as well as possible. I used several movie programs and it took a many man-hours to accomplish this, but that's what our children and grandchildren got for their 2005 Christmas presents. I'm not sure how much of a big hit these made as Christmas gifts, but I know this the whole thing was a labor of love and my heirs now have a record of themselves and their parents growing up. I only wish that whole family had taken the time to do this a lot sooner so that all of the people could have been identified and all of the scenes could have been documented. We waited too long.
