    1. [INSTJOSE] Article: Don't Let Name Spelling Stand in Your Way
    2. Richard Berkheiser
    3. Hi everyone! Here's an interesting article from Rootsweb Review. Enjoy! Rick B -------------------- Using Rootsweb By Joan Young Don't Let Name Spelling Stand in Your Way My maiden name is MYERS. I can remember my parents telling me that the name had always been spelled MYERS in our family. What a shock when I began researching many years ago and found my great-grandfather's baptismal record with the name spelled MEYERS. Then I found that his father and grandfather are listed as MEYERS in the 1850 census as well. A couple more generations back the surname was spelled MEYER. Early generations of MEYERs are buried in Lower Bermudian Cemetery in Adams County, Pennsylvania. How can you argue with a name spelling carved on a tombstone? In the Upper Conewago Brethren Cemetery in Adams County, my ARNOLD ancestors are surrounded by members of the STUDEBAKER family. This family's claim to fame is that they had a wagon shop and crafted Conestoga Wagons. Their descendants later manufactured the Studebaker automobiles. One tombstone in this cemetery clearly bears the inscription "Sarah STEWTHEBAKER." Alas, Sarah was married to a STUDEBAKER, but she will forever be known to the world as Sarah STEWTHEBAKER. A photo of her tombstone can be found on the USGenWeb Tombstone Photo Project page, on the Adams County USGenWeb site. Before the days of driver's licenses, Social Security numbers, and military registrations that require a fixed name spelling, people didn't give much thought to how their surname was written. Not all spelling variations you come across are permanent-some merely reflect a different spelling on a single record and not an actual change of name. (For more information on names, see the RootsWeb's Guide to Tracing Family Trees: Lesson 2.) Budding genealogists tend to get bogged down looking for "correct" name spellings and overlook variant surnames, or even translations of their surname from another language. Such a rigid view of name spellings can keep you from successfully tracing your ancestors. "Foreign" names were shortened, translated, and changed outright by families who wanted to fit into the American melting pot. But more often names simply evolved based upon their sound. In some countries where patronymic naming systems were used, permanent surnames were chosen after arriving in America. A Welshmen named Humphrey ap [son of] HOWELL may have become Humphrey HOWELL. Or, he may have become Humphrey POWELL, based upon the contraction of "ap" and "HOWELL." Early Swedish immigrants to New Sweden (the area surrounding what is now Wilmington, Delaware) sometimes took their patronymic name as a permanent surname while others chose "aliases" such as RAMBO and MINK. Others shortened their patronymic names; JONASSON became JONES. The evolution of surnames is not exclusively an American phenomenon. My French Huguenot ancestors left France and settled in Germany long before coming to Pennsylvania in the mid 1700s. The spelling of their surname changed over the generations from CHERDRON to SHETRONE and finally SHEDERON as they intermarried with Germans. Whatever the cause of name changes and spelling variations, make use of all available resources in tracking your ancestors. That includes checking any and all possible spellings. Be creative and sound out the names. Consider translations in your hunt for your ancestors. Your German METZGER ancestors may have become BUTCHERs in America. Many search engines allow you to use Soundex or Metaphone searches for surnames. WorldConnect's advanced search engine allows Exact, Soundex, or Metaphone searches. RootsWeb's Guide to Tracing Family Trees: Lesson 9 explains Soundex. Metaphone is similar to Soundex in that it is based upon the sound of a name rather than its spelling; however, some feel it is more accurate than Soundex. Try both to catch variant spellings of a surname. RootsWeb's Surname Resource page is another excellent reference for finding variant spellings and may give you suggestions for additional spellings to check. Take a fresh look at the surnames you are researching. Consider additional spellings and, above all, be creative in your searches. 2. At this time I am not moving the web site. After doing some major checking the number of files that the links would need changed is astronomical. For example in obits there are over 13,000 links and the Ladewski Papers have over 15,000 links that would need to be changed. With many items still coming in daily I do not have the time to change all the links to the web site. The two above are just examples and there are many more files with many links. So for now we are still at rootsweb and unless something changes, that is where it will be for sometime. ****************************************************************************** ************ Sharon Gill Vanden Bossche _Home Page_ (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familygenealogy03/index.htm) _E-mail_ (http://SharonV45@aol.com/) : Visit - _Honoring my Family Veteran's_ (http://www.freewebs.com/sharonv45/index.htm) Hostess at: _St. Joseph County, INGenweb - Genealogy Website_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~instjose/) Take a look at our St. Joseph County Web site, it is really great - People have generously contributed, to make researching St. Joseph County, IN a "GREAT" place to visit and research. _St. Joseph County, IN - Mailing list @ Yahoo_ (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/StJosephCo_Indiana/) Also take a look at the _Wood Lake Scout Reservation's 50th Anniversary_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~instjose/scouting/woodlake50.htm) Web Site **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. There is a Daniel and Ida Yoder living in St. Joseph Co. IN, but never do they list a child Andrew in their family, and he should have shown up in at least one census. I did find on the WPA Birth Records for IN an Andrew born to Napoleon Dan and Ida Crye on May 22, 1882. My Daniel N. Yoder and Hannah Jane also list a son Andrew born May 1880 (listed in that census) Hannah Jane was a Crye, and in the estate sale of 1885 in Allen Co. IND she is listed as Ida Yoder. Daniel is a widow in the 1900 census and Andrew is living in another household as a border in MI. Additional children listed are Daniel Jacob, Hugh and Archie (in the estate sale). Daniel J. Yoder is born to Daniel J. and Jane Crye in June 1886 in St. Joseph Co IN. I feel confident this Andrew is part of my Crye line, but do find that Daniel and Ida in the St. Jospeh area too. I don't find my Daniel N. in 1910, but I do find Andrew and Gr! ace in the 1920-1920 census. Andrew died in 1922 according to the obit in the Moringside Addition of South Bend. ag Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Grace Daisey Brobst Ingels. My name is Barbara Brobst Williams and I research for our Brobst Family Historical Registry. This marriage is the connection to our family. Grace had two children with her Ingles husband, Dorsey Donald and Franklin. She and Andrew had a son Joseph Yoder. Grace died 15 April 1966 in South Bend. Her obit states that husband preceded her in death and in 1966, son Joseph Yoder was living in Chicago. She is buried in St Joseph Valley Memorial Park in South Bend. Is this the same Andrew Napoleon Yoder? Hope it is and this information is helpful. I am tring to trace Joseph Yoder and decendants. The building was located at the corner of Division(now called Western Ave.) and Walnut St. Because the railroad passed behind the building on an angle the back ran parallel to the railroad, thus the building was shaped like an iron. My grandparents lived upstairs. I am trying to find a picture of this building. It was torn down in appx. 1930 to make room for a viaduct to be built. The viaduct was completed in 1935. M. C. A. Robert Vermande and Lamar Cunningham Take Lead. Robert Vermande and Lamar Cunningham are the first two boys to pass the efficiency tests given by the Y. M. C. A. Vermande and Cunningham have passed the physical, religious and educational tests. Sixteen of the boys passed the physical test, three the educational test and two the religious test. Demoss Emmons was the only boy besides Vermande and Cunningham, to pass the educational test. Word was recived to-day telling the local association that it ranks first in efficiency tests for a city of the size of South Bend. The efficiency tests are being conducted by the Y. M. C. A. throughout the United States. The last of the course of talks by Dr. Harry Helman in "First Aid to the Injured" will be delivered Friday evening. It is probable that other classes will be formed in the near future. Boys from the Colfax, Madison and Lafayette schools will be guests of the boy's department of the Y. M. C. A. Saturday evening. This entertainment is one of the series of entertainemtns for schools given by the association. Mayor Fred W. Keller will address the members of the Newsboys' club Sunday morning at the Y. M. C. A. The enrollment of the club has been increased considerable during the past months and is free to all newsboys. Following the talk by Mayor Keller the boys will be allowed the use of the swimming tanks and games. The first meeting this year of the High school Bible club will be held this evening in the north lobby of the Y. M. C. A. A. B. Thielens, of the Studebaker corporation, will speak. Preceding the talk by Mr. Thielens supper will be served. That boys attending gymnasium classes may be handled in a faster and easier manner a new system has been installed in the boys' department of the Y. M. C. A. The system consists of an alphabetical arrangement around the desk. The boys line up according to the initial of their last name and in this manner considerable time is saved. This system was installed by J. Walter Kamaiopill/Kamaiopili/Kamalopill/Kamalopili?, acting director of the boys' department.
