Just curious if anyone knows anything about any Richies/Richeys in Indiana (around Shelby County and surrounding environs) -- my great great grandfather William Washington (Richey) Woodruff (b. Dec 1869-ish) was the son of Caroline Woodruff and James Richie/Richey (married 27 Nov 1868 in Shelby County, IN; family lore has it that there were issues regarding this marriage, so he ended up taking his mother's last name, though in the 1870 census he is 6 months old with the name William Richey). In the 1870 census Caroline and young William are living with Caroline's mother Jane (Snider) Woodruff. Caroline disappears by the 1880 census (haven't found her death date, yet), so young William is brought up by his grandmother Jane (Snider) Woodruff, and is only ever referred to as William Washington Woodruff (alternately Woodroof) after the 1870 census. Another complicating factor is that family lore also has it that William Washington (Richey) Woodruff is also half-Native American ('supposedly' on his mother's side, but I'm beginning to believe it was on his father's side), specifically "Blackfoot," which I've come to learn may refer not to the Montana/Canada tribe, but an "Eastern Blackfoot"/Saponi tribe from Virginia/North Carolina/Kentucky. I have photos of my great great grandfather, and he does have distinct NA features. Any assistance/information is greatly appreciated!
