There were Federal Pensions and State Pensions. The Federal Pensions go back to the Rev. War. and all wars since. There are also State Pensions. Here's an example of what can be found. Pethuel Foster served in the War of 1812 from Mass. He operated a cannon. One exploded during a battle and shattered his right shoulder. He was a teenager. His right arm hung limp and useless for the rest of his life. By 1820 he was in MO. He tried for a pension every few years from the time he got out of the army and was turned down everytime. He did get bountyland in Ill. on the way west and sold it. Finally, his Congressman in MO and the Congressman from his old home in Mass. brought the matter up in Congress. Congress ORDERED the War Dept. to give him a pension. Since he still had the use of one arm, they gave him a half pension, in 1843. (Things haven't changed much, have they..) He died a few years later. That, plus much info on his family in Mass. and Mo. came from his pension record. Jim . . James R.
