I'm butting in that I know - - BUT at one time and I do not recall which census it was, whether one or more, but Indiana has been shown as IA which in all rights indicates it should be Iowa ~ ~ just in case anyone has an IA in between two IN or Ind ~ ~ my 2nd great grandfather was shown as born IA where in fact they had not left the state of Indiana until moving out here to Washington in 1904. At that time someone had told me of the mixup of IA for Indiana rather than Iowa. Just more confusion <grin>. But if in doubt, double check.     3. IA was the abbreviation for Indiana until Iowa became a state, then many census takers continued to use it as they had learned in school.. . . James R.
