    3. I think embalming was developed during the Civil War so that soldiers who had died far from home could be shipped home. I read someplace that one of the reasons people sat up with bodies was so that nothing could disturb the body in the night, as well as to keep it company. I'd forgotten about that too! When I was 5 years old my best friend died. They kept her in the living room at home before the funeral and my dad was one of the people who sat up all night with her. That was in 1952. I don't remember them staying at the funeral homes, as both of them in Morristown were family homes as well as funeral homes. The families lived upstairs.
