    3. So why is there a major gas line running north from Mexico straight through Jackson Township? Sounds explosive. 3. There was a natural gas explosion on Aug 11, 1890 at and around the Ogden (now Van Pelt) cemetery south of Waldron. Ron Hamilton wrote a column about this in the Shelbyville News April 28, 1999, and it is described in the Waldron Bicentennial Edition 1976 booklet called "The Waldron Story or Conn's Creek Reflections". Hamilton's article says local people thought it was the end of the world. It blew out part of the cemetery where it overhangs the Flat Rock/Conns Creek rivers intersection. The explosion was so large that news of it was carried in The New York Times the day after. . Natural gas is common in parts of Indiana, so I understand.
