    3. The METHODIST connection. Sylvester Thomas and Kalistia Kitchell were married Feb. 2, 1846 by Rev. Samuel Morrison. More from the Florence Rock booklet May, 1946. The Baptist church in Hanover transferred to the Christian Church and continued holding their services at Hanover until 1880, when they erected their present building in Morristown. This building was remodeled and enlarged a few years ago. Rev. Thomas Shipp of the Methodist Protestant Church was an outstanding minister of his day. He moved here in 1850. A Methodist Protestant class has been organized at the home of Jasper Hewitt, north of Hanover, in 1832 or 33 by Samuel Morrison. Due to the efforts of Rev. Shipp, a building was erected on Main Street in Morristown. It was the first church in the town. The original town of Morristown was laid out in 1828 by Col. Rezin Davis and Rev. Samuel Morrison. ... They were ana baptists of which the Regular Baptist Church does not want any association with at all. They had off shoots which today are known as Primitive Baptists, the Christian Church, Church of Christ or Desciples of Christ. Research "Robert Campbell" and the Campbellites --- there is even a connection to the Owenittes at New Harmony, Indiana even though it is in scholarly debate between the two organizations. I believe there was a church right there by the cemetery at one time--I've read something about it somewhere and now can't remember where. The Christian Church was a more liberal version of the Baptist Church, so they are closely related. What I read in that previous passage was that they changed from Baptist to Christian, then later built a new church in Morristown rather than Hanover. There were houses and at least one store in Hanover at one time. I suppose with Morristown being so close, it was more convenient to relocate there as the town of Hanover died out since Morristown had stores, churches, bank, etc. I recall reading that at one time Hanover was quite a bustling little town. What the hopes were for a town in those days and reality were often quite different things. There were those who thought Gwynneville was going to be quite a town too. Of the three, only Morristown has become a solid little village, while Gwynneville is barely hanging on and Hanover is kaput. Jill

What connection to the other Stones there, I do not know. Alfred and Lucinda are together in the 1850c, with her Young children, minus an elder dau who was married, and they had a daughter named "Percy" Stone, age 6. I have never been able to find these parents nor this dau again. And I have really looked under everything I can think of, and nationwide too. By these histories it seems clear that the school Levi and the Kitchells started, in a log cabin, was near what became the Hanover Baptist Ch. and later a new church building became the Christian Church. But neither had anything to do with the Hanover Cem. Is that how you read it? It does not seem to be Blood's own cabin, because the earlist Blood owned land in Sec 24. Maybe this was central. All of the names are people they lived around, but none of them are listed as members, so they must have been some other denomination. I can't see them being nothing, or people would not have had them teach their children, or elect Piercy as a Justice, don't you think? So, maybe they worshipped somewhere else after all. Carleen

    3. Hanover Twp. Religious History From History of Shelby County, Indiana Brant and Fuller, 1887: "The Morristown Christian Church is the outgrowth of the old Hanover Class, which was organized in the latter part of the (eighteen) thirties in a school-house which stood in Section 23, Hanover Township. Many of the early members and ministers were formerly Baptists, having been constituent members of a society of that denomination, which was established at the same place as early as 1824. Rev. Isaac Benjamin having renounced the creeds and doctrines of the Baptist Church became one of the most earnest supporters of the doctrines of the Church of Christ, and many of the members left the old church and with him as their pastor, organized the new. Among the most prominent early members were the Coles, Stones, Bloods, Dyers, and Caulkins. Elder Butler was probably the first regular pastor after Benjamin. Revs. Hollingsworth, Hurst, Hobb, Smith, Dabbinspike, Franklin, Land, Ravens, Conner, McDuffey, and Campbell all served the church in an early day. In 1843, a ! large frame church house was erected .". Since most members were from around Morristown, they erected and dedicated a brick building there in 1880.

    2. In a message dated 5/27/2005 4:44:35 PM Eastern Standard Time, CCarnivale@aol.com writes: ank you! I was sent new information that the school my Young and his brother-in-law Kitchell started was near the present Hanover church. It is rather confusing as this memoir says another school [Baptist} was started in a building that stands today in Hanover cemetery. Then she says they erected this church as a "Christian Church". This may have been at Morristown. So, is the Hanover Church and cemetery at two different places? Carleen In my lifetime I don't ever recall seeing any building at Hanover Cemetery and I've been past it about a zillion times since the 40s, right up thru 2003. The Cemetery is on the Shelbyville Road (I suppose it's the Morristown Road if you're coming from Shelbyville) south of Morristown. You go south out of Morristown and the road essentially ends, although you can go right or left, but right leads you straight into the Hanover Cemetery. The road makes another 90 degree turn to the left (south) at the cemetery. There's a Christian Church in Morristown but it's never had Hanover in it's name. I don't ever recall any Baptist church. There's still a Methodist Church. Used to be a Nazarene Church but they moved out of the building and it's something else now, but I don't know what. It's very flat wide open land all around the cemetery and you can see quite a distance. There's really nothing but houses on the east side of the road coming out of Morristown (and those houses are on a hill-- for some reason that side is not so flat).

    3. When I said Grandmother, I meant further back than just a grandmother. Hope that clears that up. >Carrie's grandmother was Sarah KINNEY,

    3. Thanks Barb. If anyone knows of this PHILLIPS family, my husband ties in with Carrie. Their ancestry leads back to the Mayflower and John ALDEN and Priscilla MULLINS. Carrie's grandmother was Sarah KINNEY, whose mother was Alice LINDER, father, Marshall KINNEY. My husband's ancestor also was Alice LINDER, through her second marriage to John W HUNTSMAN. They lived in Belmont Co OH. George W PHILLIPS, d 1987 Carrie CARMICHAEL Phillips, d 1984 http://www.rootsweb.com/~inshelby/obituaries/obit_phillips.htm

    2. Thank you! Carleen

    3. ...same booklet Morristown and Community The Baptist church at Hanover transferred to the Christian church and continued holding their services at Hanover until 1880, when they erected their present building in Morristown. This building was remodeled and enlarged a few years ago. (1946). The Town of Hanover.. The first church at Hanover was organized July 26, 1823, according to the original document, now the property of Mrs. Ina Logan Gordon, excerpts from which state. "A number of Brethern and Sisters of the Regular Baptist Order with letters of recommendation, together with one recently baptised, met at the house of Moses Blood for the purpose of uniting together in Church Order, under the name Brethern and Sisters expressing a desire of uniting in Chhurch relation: Present, William Oldham, James Tyner, Jepe Miller, Jonathan Hill, Solomon Tyner, George Penwell, David Fisher, Isaac Benjamin, Richard Tyner, Anna Blood, Rachel Miller, Arvilla Dyer, Almene Stone, Rebeckah Cole, Arletta Benjamin, Nanny Hill, Martha Osborn, Anna Penwell, Presilla Tyner, Jeremiah Tyner." Early school records of Hanover show that the first school was held there in 1823 in the homes of the settlers at night, and was taught by Levi Young, Moses, and John Kitchell. The first teacher regularly employed (subscription school) was Moses Blood, who taught a term in 1824 in a log cabin which stood near the present site of the Hanover church in section 23. It is assumed, as was the case in other early settlements, that this cabin was used both for school and church purposes. Who was your Stone connection? Can't recall the name.
