Ok in Jackson TWP, 1870 census, I found James M. Smith, 59, born KY, Farmer Anna E. Smith, 63, born NY, keeping house Allen M, 33, born ??? illegible could be Iowa, Farmer Randolph, 22, born IN, Farmer Anna K, 21, born IN, at home Value of Real Estate 5600 Value of Personal Property 400 There were 9 listings for James Smith, two were James M (I'm recalling this as I've not got the page in front of me), 4 or 5 were born in KY. However, the wife's name was wrong on all of them, things like Nancy, Alma I think, several different names. Anna E was the closest thing to Eliza. Is this the family? Jill
The Ancestry Indexers have in many cases compounded the problem by putting "Iowa" on the Indiana census indexes where the original census page says "IA" . Jim . . James R. Very interesting maybe this is why I can not find my Kin. Thanks WAnda
Thanks Jill how about 1870 for James M. Smith b.Ky 182? I know they went to Iowa in 1854 but was back by 1867. Wanda
I looked on Heritage Quest, but they don't have the 1850 census. No results for the 1860 census. Jill
I am looking for James M. Smith and his wife Eliza. James was born in Ky 182? and Eliza born in Indiana I appreciate the help Wanda
Don, I appreciate your help. You gave me some names I didn't have. Will do some investigating. Thanks again, Ruth
You are welcome and I do hope you find them. Myself, I hate abbreviations <LOL>. I can remember when the company I was employed by at the time, insisted on certain ways that the P.O. would "allow" mail to go through and I did have to abide by their rules while at work but when at home I do it my way - no abbreviations. I'm butting in that I know - - BUT at one time and I do not recall which census it was, whether one or more, but Indiana has been shown as IA which in all rights indicates it should be Iowa ~ ~ just in case anyone has an IA in between two IN or Ind ~ ~ my 2nd great grandfather was shown as born IA where in fact they had not left the state of Indiana until moving out here to Washington in 1904. At that time someone had told me of the mixup of IA for Indiana rather than Iowa. Just more confusion <grin>. But if in doubt, double check. I have two libraries I can use. I may even have 3 but I have not checked.
Thanks for rechecking that for me. Yes, that 1850 is all I have for Lucinda, and her husband. Also that Percy and Theodore Young. Seth is mine and yes that is him in Rush. Get this, stuff like this makes you tear at your hair sometimes: The Levi Young there changed his name, in 1851, when he got married, to Leven Tull Young! We found an indenture for him under that name [on the Shelby site, now], and his wife stated in his CW pension that Leven was not the name he was born with! This is another twist too. He had moved to AR before the CW, and he went back to IN and joined the army and after the war he went back to AR! So, it has occurred to us that Theodore may have another name he went by too. Have a good weekend everyone. Carleen
It is very likely they all died in the cholera epidemic in 1851. I too checked all of Ancestry and found the other Alfred and Lucinda Stone in succeeding censuses. I checked for Lucy Stone. I find no Percy which may have been a middle name. Your Alfred was born abt. 1792 and your Lucinda about 1804 according to the 1850 Census. His name was spelled "Afoud". I also searched for Levi , Theodore and other Youngs. Seth Young with the correct age is in Rush County in 1860 working as a laborer on someone else's farm. I would appreciate the family members for Rev. James M. Smith. His wife is Eliza. Thanks Wanda
If your local library has a website, they may have a link to Heritage Quest you can access from home. Mine (Louisville, KY) does. All you need is a current library card and you log in to the library's online sources. It's available 24 hours a day from your home. Sure can't beat that for convenience! My library subscribes to Heritage Quest. I access it at home by putting in my library card and PIN number. Many libraries do subscribe but I don't have any idea how much they pay. I am very grateful we have it. In addition to the census - in which you view the actual census - HQ now also has the Revolutionary War Pensions. You can view the whole pension record. It also has PERSI. My library also subscribes to Ancestry Plus but it can only be viewed at the library and the library has to subscribe for each computer where it is available. If they only pay for one computer, it cannot be viewed on 2 computers at the same time. Both AncestryPlus and Heritage Quest are also available to use at any National Archives Branch. Kathy
