Wanda wrote: > I am looking for William Smith born 1845 Union Township Shelby County > Indiana. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks Wanda Well -- After asking some questions, I continued researching -- having a slow day here -- and in the 1850 IN census, I did find a Wm. Smith b. 1845 in Shelby County. His father was James M. SMITH, a "R. Baptist Preacher" age 30, b. in Kentucky. His wife is Elizabeth J., age 27 b. Indiana. They have two children, WILLIAM E. SMITH, age 5, b. IN, and Joseph C., age 2, also b. IN. They are living in Union Township. So this does seem to fit your parameters -- or does it? I could NOT find this family in 1860. Not anywhere. But since James M. Smith was a preacher perhaps he was transferred to another church in another state. Let me know if this seems to be the right direction. I also found found two William Smiths about the right age, in IN the 1860 census. One was 15-year old William T. Smith, born Shelby County Indiana. His parents were ADAM SMITH (b. Clermont Co., O) and Elizabeth who was b. in Kentucky. There were 7 children in this family. (William, Susan, Mary, Stephen, Amos, Eliza, and Fletcher.) William was the oldest. This family was living in Sugar Creek Tnp. in 1860. I looked for the Adam Smith family in 1850 and found them in Sugar Creek Tnp., Shelby County. William is 6 years old at that time. His name is almost illegible on the census, written as "Wm. F" and if one didn't know it was William and that the middle initial was "T" in 1860, it would look like, perhaps, Tom F. His younger sisters at that time were "Susan, Frances, and Margaret." Either some names were changed, or the family lost two children. Then there is the family of J. JONES SMITH Smith, age 43, a Presbyterian minister, and his wife Rebecca. Both were born in IRELAND. They also have seven children ages 4 to 18, including a 16-year old boy named William R. Smith. William was born in Virginia, as were all 4 older children. The three youngest were b. in North Carolina. So if your family history includes Ireland, and a Presbyterian minister, then perhaps he is yours. So with this family, there are now two Smith ministers in IN with sons names William who are about the same age. Let me know if I'm on the right track here. Hope this helps. Jeanne Surber
Hello Wanda, and all ... Wanda writes: > I am looking for William Smith born 1845 Union Township Shelby County > Indiana. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks Wanda The search for William Smith in Union Tnp, Shelby Co. (or anywhere else) is a challenge. I sympathize because I also have two William Smiths in other states, and they are both quite elusive in spite of family records that prove they did, in fact, exist. Your Wm. Smith would have been 5 years old at the 1850 census in Shelby County. What was the clue that led you to believe he was, indeed, b. in Union Township? Did you ever find him in the 1850 census? Wanda, I know you've done a lot of research for many years, not only on the Smith family. I see one of your recent Smith queries as follows: "I would love to know if you have a William Smith in your family bible born about 1855 or before in VA in your family bible. My William Smith died in Indiana 1877 or 1878. My William Smith died before his son Jacob Oliver was born March of 1878. Wanda " so ..... in light of your most recent query, does this mean that you found evidence that your Wm. Smith was *not* born in VA "about 1855 or before" but in Indiana in 1845?? And that he was the father of Jacob Oliver Smith b. March 1878? Please let us know what you know for sure about this particular Smith family. Then maybe we'll have a better fix on which township or county to focus on. Jeanne Surber
I am looking for WIlliam Smith born 1845 Union Township Shelby County Indiana. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks Wanda
Thank you for the in depth information. Your info confirms much of what I have & added some. I figured out why Walter Bishop & Elizabeth Hasler were called nephew & niece. Lizzie's appears to be Elizabeth Hasler, d/o Rudolph & Margaret J (Oldham) Hasler, which would make Lizzie the niece & Walter a nephew by marriage. One thing to add. Eileen/Eleanor/Ellender was Eleanor Harrell Crow Oldham (not Eileen), confirmed by her tombstone at Brandywine Cemetery which shows her name was Eleanor Oldham. Husband John Oldham & their birth & deaths are on the same stone (I have a picture). Also Eleanor was named as Eleanor in her obituary (The Shelbyville Democrat, 19 Nov. 1896) & in various children's obits. Here is some add'l information: Doctor Rigdon Oldham 12 Apr 1850 Margaret Oldham 06 Jun 1853 Dau Elizabeth born 30 Nov 1877 m. Isaac Walter Bishop 29 Oct 1899 in Shelby Co. m. Frank E. Huffman 22 Apr 1903 in Shelby. Co. Shares a stone with Frank in Brandywine Cemetery. I don't have Walter Bishop's death. He's not listed in Brandywine that I can see. Thanks again. -Mary

Would love to know if there are estate records & an obituary available for Mary Ann Crow who died 27 Mar 1911 & for the Walter (b. 1879) & Lizzie (Hasler) Bishop (b. 1878) family. Mary Ann Crow was daughter of William & Eleanor (Harrell) Crow. She was head of household (single) & living with Walter & Lizzie (Hasler) Bishop on the 1900 Census. Walter & Lizzie are named nephew & niece, but I can't figure the relationship. I also can't read the name of their son born in Apr. 1900. If someone else can read this, I would appreciate it. Thanks so much. - Mary
The month-old baby born in April 1900 is Spencer Bishop also listed as a nephew to Mary Ann Crow of Brandywine Twp. Shelby County. Dear Linda, After long pondering and searching I have been trying to tie Abraham Hill husband of Sarah (Hawkins) Chesser with my Hill line. My question is on Alexander, William in Iowa, Isaac and Thomas Hill you mention in your note: Are they related to Abraham Hill and how? Who would have been their mother? Do you have dates of birth? Thank You, Kimbra Hill Smith -----Original Message----- From: Linda Chesser [mailto:lchesser4@insightbb.com] Sent: Monday, May 30, 2005 6:28 PM To: INSHELBY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [INSHELBY] WHEELER vs WILLIAMS & WHITE I was astonished to see Abraham Hill's estate mentioned in the civil suit below. He was the stepfather of James Chesser, my husband's second great-grandfather who came to Shelby Co. IN in 1834-35 from Warren Co. OH. Abraham Hill married the widow of John Chesser (1769-1804), Sarah (Hawkins) Chesser (1782-abt.1852) on the 22 March 1805 in Monongalia Co. VA. Needless to say, I would love to know if Barb Huff or anyone else has run across any other references to Alexander, William in Iowa, Isaac, or Thomas Hill in early Shelby Co. As I read Phyllis Miller Fleming's postings containing so many names of individuals in Brandywine Twp. and the surrounding area, I was reminded of Thomas Benton Carey who settled in Fairland with his parents, Thomas V. and Margaret (Lee) Carey in 1852. He was born in Wheeling, before there was a West Virginia in 1839. He lost both his parents within four years of settling in Fairland. He married three times, first to Susan E. Reed in 1868. They had three children: Charles G., Mary Irene, and Margaret B. Carey. He married Sarah J. Holmes in 1885, and married a final time to Margaret Ann Endsley in 1894. They had one child, Bonnie Lucille Carey born in 1895, who I was honored to meet when she was 95 years old and a resident of Heritage Manor in Shelbyville. Thomas B. Carey was a veteran of the Civil War and worked in many trades including that of salesman, carpenter, and painter. He was also a news correspondent for 40 years for The Shelby Volunteer which later merged with The Shelby Democrat sending in many tidbits of news and gossip from the Fairland area. He called himself "Gid" which you see mentioned at the head of a few of the articles Phyllis has posted. T.B.Carey was elected a Justice of the Peace in 1872 and 1876 and was a Shelby County Deputy Sheriff under Sheriff Albert McCorkle for two years, according to Chadwick's. In 1909, he was appointed engrossing clerk of the House in the Indiana Legislature, but in 1910, the census taker wrote that he was a notary. He died October 7, 1919, in Fairland and today 400 North, both East and West, is known as Carey Road. My research in genealogy and talks I had with my husband's grandmother, Lottie (Nail) Taylor Chesser who was 96 when she passed away in 1982, led me to whom Lottie had referred to as "some Chesser woman" in Fairland. She had heard of Lucille Chesser or her daughter Justine Lavonne Chesser, but they had never met even though Maurice was a son of Lottie's brother-in-law. Lucille Carey had met Maurice Chesser, a son of Ira and Daisy (Law) Chesser, while they were substitute teachers at the Smithland School. They married shortly after Maurice had registered for the draft in 1918, and settled in Indianapolis where Maurice worked. Lavonne was born in 1920, but Maurice and Lucille later divorced. Maurice married Louise Rouse in 1936, but Lucille never remarried. So "Chesser" she remained until her death at Heritage Manor on January 11, 1992. Lavonne Chesser, T. B. Carey's granddaughter, was married in 1942 to Charles Franklin Harry of Bartholomew County who helped manage Howard and Harry Oil Company in a partnership. (Note: When I "Googled" Howard and Harry Oil Co., Fairland, Indiana, I found that the attorneys for a class action settlement which includes many companies as well as H. and H. have pension money for a "Stephan Howard" who once was employed there, but they have no current address for him. They give instructions as to how to obtain the money which may be $10,000-$12,000 or more as the other settlements have been.) Charles and Lavonne Chesser Harry had two daughters, one of whom is still living. When Lavonne and I last spoke before her death just over 10 years ago and that of her husband in 1995, she had two grandsons who were living north of Indianapolis. Thank you Phyllis, for all the work you do with this website and I hope more old news articles are posted. They provide a wealth of information to many individuals seeking their roots.
