Jill, you are quite welcome. Sometimes you have to be creative when searching for surnames in the early census records. Most of the census takers could barely write or spell. They just wrote what they heard or how they thought it should be spelled. Sometimes they talked to a child or neighbor and received wrong information. The thing that drives me crazy is the place of birth. Sometimes they asked where are you from and not where were you born. Can be a BIG difference. <smile> Glad I could help. Ma
With all I have going on, I don't know why I'm doing this, but apparently it's the time! On the Family Search site I found the marriage of William Conner and Mary Clayton, 29 Jan 1820, Franklin, Indiana. Possibly the Wil and Mary shown in the census records in 1860 in Shelby Co. I looked through the obituaries for Conner and while most of them were in Liberty Twp (the Blue Ridge or Cynthiana area, which if I have my geography right is Liberty Twp -- the SE corner of the county), but found none for either of these people. I also check for Huls obituaries and found none. Do any exist that anyone might have access to? Thanks, Jill

Hales instead of Huls. Ruth is the mother of James. Elsa and Amos are her children. Her husband Nathan died in 1839 and they are not buried together unless her grave is unmarked. The last she is known to have been alive is in 1868 when she signed an affadavit attesting to a grandchild's birth. Ruth was a Baker a large family many of whom moved to Indiana, so it was thought she was living with some of them after her husband's death. Apparently not. <<1860 Shelby Co In Will R Conner Liberty, Shelby, IN 53 1806 Ohio Male Mary Conner Liberty, Shelby, IN 51 1808 Kentucky Female Ruth Hulse Liberty, Shelby, IN 68 1791 Kentucky Female Benjamin F Hulse Liberty, Shelby, IN 15 1844 Indiana Male Jane W Hulse Liberty, Shelby, IN 9 1850 Indiana Female Post Office: Conns Creek Roll: M653_296 Page: 486 Year: 1860 Head of Household: Will R Conner >> Once again, bingo. This is the first connection I've seen between the Conners and the Huls other than the marriage of James and Mary Jane. So the Conner inlaws of James must have taken in his mother Ruth and two of her grandchildren. Whose children these are I don't know but she had 4 sons. They aren't the children of James, but possibly the children of Amos who was killed in the Civil War or John who died in 1855. The other son moved to Missouri. Thanks so much for opening this door. I know nothing except that in my search for possible parents of Mary Jane Conner, I found the record of the application for a marriage license by James Conner and Jane Webb 19 Mar 1823 in Shelby County. I don't know that these are the parents of Mary Jane Conner, just a possiblity based on the dates and the last name Conner. Mary Jane Conner was born abt 1822 (from 1850 census) in IN. She died after 1860 but before 1862--and I don't know where I got that info. I didn't used to be too good about documenting sources. Jill
