From Barb Huff: Frederick W MILLER, dec'd, circa 1913 http://www.rootsweb.com/~inshelby/courthouse/estate_records/est_leuchtenburg.htm I found a loose paper in a vault box and Barb transcribed it for us. Turns out Frederick had a HUGE estate; I was able to put this paper in the correct bundle. This grandson's name was LEUCHTENBURG. Does anyone know anything about this family? P

Pensions for Union soldiers would usually be from the US Government and these are the pensions you would get from NARA. Indiana was a Union State so the pension would be from the US Govt. Confederate soldiers did not get pensions from the US Govt. They got them from the state from which they served. Some of the Confederate States did not have money after the War and therefore they did not give pensions. Some states such as Missouri and Kentucky had both Confederate and Union troops and then you have to search to discover which side they supported and search for a pension accordingly. You can get some information from the Indiana State Archives arc@icpr.state.in.us If you do not live in Indiana, it is quite expensive to get info from them. There is a $20 charge up front if you do not live in Indiana - I consider this fair enough since I no longer live in Indiana and pay Indiana taxes but the charge per page is also expensive. Kathy
By the way, when I said I couldn't afford the Pension Records, I didn't mean to imply that I was broke. I just make it a point to never pull money out of savings for day to day expenses. Jim . . James R. Baker, Jr. (jrbakerjr) Free Genealogy Databases http://www.jrbakerjr.com . .
There were Federal Pensions and State Pensions. The Federal Pensions go back to the Rev. War. and all wars since. There are also State Pensions. Here's an example of what can be found. Pethuel Foster served in the War of 1812 from Mass. He operated a cannon. One exploded during a battle and shattered his right shoulder. He was a teenager. His right arm hung limp and useless for the rest of his life. By 1820 he was in MO. He tried for a pension every few years from the time he got out of the army and was turned down everytime. He did get bountyland in Ill. on the way west and sold it. Finally, his Congressman in MO and the Congressman from his old home in Mass. brought the matter up in Congress. Congress ORDERED the War Dept. to give him a pension. Since he still had the use of one arm, they gave him a half pension, in 1843. (Things haven't changed much, have they..) He died a few years later. That, plus much info on his family in Mass. and Mo. came from his pension record. Jim . . James R. This is a very useful site for those who are interested in pension and military records. http://www.oz.net/~cyndihow/pensions.htm#A
Is that his pension record, or his war record? I always get the pension record from the state, and they are usually on microfilm, which you might order to view at your local library. I have copied such pension records from the microfilm also, at a library with a view/copy machine, at a minimal charge per page. Is there a site for Indiana pension records index, anyone? This is the site to look up units or individual soldiers. http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm At 06:27 PM 8/3/2005 -0400, you wrote: >There is no estate or probate record for him. I have several and I always get it all. I would rather wait and get the whole thing. I have one that is almost 3 inches thick. The man was married 4 times and it even has all the marriage and divorce records, guardianship records for children, etc. Thanks, Jim . . James R. Jim, You can get the "short" pension record for $14.75. NARA chooses about 10 pages of genealogical information of their choosing. This is what I have always ordered and it has contained information that was helpful to me. The last one I ordered was a "mother's pension" and it was marked "complete file" and only contained 8 pages which were "good" pages. If I had ordered the complete file for $37 I still would only have received those 8 pages because that is all that there was. These pensions have never been microfilmed and probably never will be - they are loose pieces of paper. Copies are made when you order. Many people do like the complete file which may contain much military information. Kathy Ridlen NARA Volunteer in Kansas City

Mariah posted the obituary of Anna West Leisure about a week ago. Anna's husband was also from Shelby Co. http://www.rootsweb.com/~inshelby/obituaries/obit_leisure.htm Thanks to all of you who helped Mariah find Anna's parents. I'm quite sure we have the best county list anywhere! P
From Barb Huff: http://www.rootsweb.com/~inshelby/courthouse/estate_records/est_crowe.htm This is that ideal estate that we all wish for at one time or another. Mary Crowe had her estate distributed among sisters, brothers, half-sisters, half-brothers, nieces (incl 1/2) and nephews (incl 1/2). The paperwork includes the 1912 residence for each legatee.
There is no estate or probate record for him. His death date is only recorded in a family Bible. I think now I might have a way to get my answers. I found that Sylvester has a Civil War Pension Record. Problem is that it's $37 and I can't afford that right now. I'm going back to work so I'll get it soon. I'm retired right now, for the 4th time, but Lockheed in Ft. Worth has already called and wants me back, so I'll probably go. Boeing in Wichita wants me too. I'm considering both. Thanks, Jim . .
