I appreciate the news from LA. My sister lives in Greenwood just west of Shreveport. I've found many of us have links to Shreveport since Western Electric, Bell, AT&T, etc. divested. Many Shelby Co. IN people who retired at that point from Western Electric in the mid to late 80s did and didn't have to move to Orlando or Shreveport. ----- Original Message ----- From: <CCarnivale@aol.com> To: <INSHELBY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 29, 2005 10:16 AM Subject: Re: [INSHELBY] Carleen / LA > I am fine. I am fine. Shreveport/Bossier City is in the far NW corner of LA, and New Orleans is in the far SW corner. "Another Country" we call it up here. ha! We capitalize it as "South Louisiana." We do have half of South Louisiana taking shelter here. They come for every storm on the Gulf nowadays. I was going to Target today, but I guess I will skip it, as it is near LSU where there is a big shelter. I bet those folks will be hitting the malls and movies in droves. No much to do in a big gym. I have folks in Mobile, etc., and so far they are okay. I lived in Miami and Ft Lauderdale for years, and I rode out several big storms. It is not fun even when you are in those outer fringes winds. Thank you very much for remembering me, Phyllis. That was nice of you. Carleen

Surnames: Auman, Gross, Senour Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Bi.2ADI/571.1 Message Board Post: "Shelbyville Wardrobe Manufacturing Company first at 120 East Elizabeth and later at 227 East Locust began operation in the early 1890s. Owned by the Chris Auman family and Milton Senour, it made sideboards, buffets, and other dining room furniture. In the Depression years it discontinued business and Russell Gross purchased the building for his NuKraft company in 1946." Source: Shelby County, Indiana History and Families, Compiled by the Shelby County Historical Society 1992, p. 86. From the Shelbyville Democrat of November 28, 1914, it was reported that the second fire that year damaged parts of the Shelbyville Wardrobe Company. In early September (1914), the entire plant was nearly destroyed by fire. The November fire, like one a few years before, burned the office, a faulty furnace being the cause. Furniture and records were saved, but the November fire caused $150 damage. Original article copied by Phyllis Miller Fleming for INSHELBY-L@rootsweb.com From the Grand Rapids (Michigan) History and Special Collections Center at the Grand Rapids Public Library, Shelbyville Wardrobe Mfg. Co. is listed twice under the heading "What Manufacturers are Doing" first on Sept. 1, 1914, page 162, column 2; and May 1, 1915. page 280, column 1.
My favorite way to read old stones is to apply plain shave cream and use a window squeegee to spread it. Instantly readable! During a recent restoration of stones which were nearly 200 years old, a cemetery stone maker who was resetting and restoring some of them advised using a 10 percent bleach/water solution to clean moss and lichen off the old stones with a toothbrush. Shave cream is mild and also biodegradable and will not harm the stone. ----- Original Message ----- From: <MaDark@aol.com> To: <INSHELBY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2005 10:59 PM Subject: [INSHELBY] Re: INSHELBY-D Digest V05 #196 > > In a message dated 8/22/2005 10:01:04 PM Central Daylight Time, > INSHELBY-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: > > I contacted a headstone maker here and > asked him if there was any safe way to be able to read > some of the headstones.
