I copied an 1863 receipt from R. SPICER, publisher of the National Volunteer. I have seen many of these in the estate bundles (c1860s) in the vault. The background has pink squiggly lines. The picture of the printing press always fascinates me. http://www.shelbycountyindiana.org/historical_articles/history_newspapers.htm (bottom of the page) P

I would be pleased to share what I know of the early family and hope you will do like wise with the current lines. I have spend my geni time trying to trace the earler years and know little of the current family. You may use my 13505 Jackie Ln St. Joseph, MO 64505 address for curent data. I also hope you may shed some light on my current quest of Mary Ann Thompson. I have been unable to learn her father's name or much about the family prior to the 1860 census where she is listed a the wife of William Henry Herron. I know her mother, also, Mary was listed in the 1860 Rush co IN census as the wife of Andrew Ensminger. Unfortunately, the census taker did not cleafify that some of the many children in their household were Thompsons and not all Ensmingers. HA You may know that Mary Ann Thompson had a sister, Olive Jane who was married to William Henry Richardson. Mary Ann Thompson first married William Jeffrey and had two daughters born in Ohio according to 1860 census. They too were in the William Henry Herron household in that census. Jeffrey had died around 1856. No other data known of his lineage, death or burial. William Henry Herron had lost his first wife as well as a son Ira. His daughter, Ann Eliza, named after his mother, also in the 1860 census. For whatever reason William Henry volunteered for the Union and unfortunately was killed in Mississippi. I do not have a place of burial but can share something of his military activity if you don't have that. Mary Ann Jeffery-Herron and William Henry Richardson were married. I have not learned the circumstance of why they came to Missouri. They did so with the three Herron children, Richardson's child and their children. Mother Mary also came to Missouri and married third to Alva Benedict. His first wife was nee Thompson. I wonder if this was the same Thompson family. Do you know details of death of Ruhama C. Herron? One of the Herrons told me he thought it was a house fire. I have never checked for early newspaper records to confirm. Ann Eliza Jeffrey married Joseph L. Evans 8 Oct 1885 in Rockport. Regarding the many given names for younger William Henry. These were told to me. I understand he did go by Douglas, I have seen no record of the others. I have data on many Herrons in the area but yet to sort them into their accurate families. I would be happy to share with you to try to solve some of these lineages. To help with this please tell me more about your William A. I have him born around 1818 in KY and his wife as Susannah Renn/Rhenn. (This birthdate was calculated from the age given in the 1860 census) Who was his father and what was his appx. birht date? Who was his son and his birth date? George W. & Eliza Smith were the parents of my William Henry Herron born 1836. Daniel b. ca 1776 and Susannah Hunter b. ca 1776 were the parents of George W. Daniel and Susannah had a son William Henry born ca 1815, but he married Julia Elsberry. I do not have a death date for Julia. Could Susannah Renn/Rhenn be a second wife by the 1860 census? Do you have a marriage date for your William and Susannah Rhenn? Also what William Herron was Susannah Boardy married to? I was given some lineage and history for Susannah Rhenn by Joan Berkey if you would like that data. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am direct decendant of William A. Herron. I have his father listed as James Herron born sometime abt 1800 but before 1815. William was my 2nd gg. His son James H. Herron was my g grandfather he was married to Susannah Renn (Rhenn) they lived in Shelby, Harrison and Barthlomew County IN. I am confused about the William H. Herron. His full name, I believe is William Henry Steven R. Douglas Herron (not sure what the R. is) and he is my ggg grandfather. My direct lineage is: William Henry Steven R. Douglas Herron --> William Henry Douglas Herron --> Charles Simpson Herron --> Harold Dean Herron --> Dad --> Me. I was very excited about your posts, for while I know nearly everything from William Henry Douglas Herron down, I hadn't been able to find anything before his father WHSRD Herron. I would very much appreciate if you could share what you've learned. (Especially the Civil War part.I'm in Iraq myself now). I have most of the information from the time Mary Ann (I didn't know that she had remarried) and the troupe arrived in Missouri. I was tracking that she and WHSRD had 2 children, Ruhama C. (who died young in 1873 and is buried in Atchison County, MO) and William Henry Douglas Herron, who married Susan Rhetta Simpson (herself one of 15 children) and went on to have a quite prolific affect in the Rock Port (Atchison County) area with 12 children who in turn went on to make "Herron" one of the most, if not the most, common names in the area. I'd love to learn more about the lineage back from WHSRD and the other children from his first marriage.and the part you discussed with William A. I'll of course share all I have as well.
