    3. >From John Ballard: "Lives of Detectives Threatened for Enforcing The Nicholson Law" http://www.shelbycountyindiana.org/newspaper/news_simpson.htm The Nicholson Law was named after Samuel Edgar Nicholson. Nicholson was born just south of us in Elizabethtown, Indiana, in 1862. He was a Friend (graduated from Earlham College, my alma mater) and a temperance advocate. I can't find the actual law. It seems, from what I did read, that Nicholson and his supporters decided it was not logical to try and discourage drinking or teach temperance when the saloons were enticing people to drink to excess. I am descended from Lydia Elen Smith, she married James M Spurrier in Shelby County in 1847. I have info on this line. I would like to compare any info you have. I also have been unable to determine exact death dates or burial info. Peggy [email protected] Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: rbeckw21 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.shelby/1175/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, Looking for antecedents of William Smith, b. VA abt. 1781-90, who married Ann (? Alexander), b. PA abt. 1795. William bought land and settled in Hanover Twp. about 1823. Eight children, of which 3 were sons named John/Alexander Smith b. VA 1822, Thomas Smith b. IN 1824(m. Rachel Young d/o Sarah), and Daniel/David Smith b. IN 1826. Dau. Mary J. b. VA 1816 (m. Alex. M. Hargrove); dau. Nancy b. 1818 VA (m. Wm. Wolf). I believe William died about 1839 and Ann died about 1871, probably both in Hanover, although unable to locate death/burial info. Does anyone have any connection or information on this "Wm. Smith" family of Hanover Twp.? (Not to be confused with the Wm. Smith families of Union Twp. or Jackson Twp.) Also need any information on Sarah (nee ?) Young b. abt. 1799 PA, mother of Rachel Young. I believe Sarah's husband died in Shelby Co., as she is "head" on the 1850 census in Hanover Twp. I think she also had a son named John Young b. abt 1823 PA. Thanks in advance for any and all information on these two families. Rebecca (nee Smith) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
