David, Thanks for sharing this. I have a couple of questions. Several of the articles I read indicate that Laura married Benjamin Garriott as opposed to Francis M. Garriott. Did Francis change his name? Was it his nickname? Or did the newspaper just plain get it wrong? Secondly, I wonder what happened to Laura after she was shot and her husband was lynched. She didn't live much longer. Do you know what happened or, perhaps, have her obit? Randi On Mon, 9 Jan 2012 18:03:51 -0600, davidkentcoy@peoplepc.com wrote: > Laura F. Randi, My guess on the confusion of the name of Laura Terrell's first husband - and this is totally a guess - I wonder if he was called "Frank" Garriott, which is a nickname for Francis? But then, someone knew his full name wasn't really Frank, and they thought it was possibly Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Garriott - so somehow the newspaper came out with Benjamin. I could not find a Benjamin Garriott in the records and the marriage records clearly show that Laura Terrell married "Francis M. Garriott, Jr." No - I do not think Francis changed his name, I think the newspapers just didn't get it totally correct. No - I do not have a copy of an obituary for any of the people involved in this tragic event, but would love to receive a copy if anyone ever finds any. I do not know what became of Laura after all of this and have almost no details of her life, other than what is available in census and other public records. Sorry. It is sad to me to realize that the Mothers of the main characters in this event all lived for many years after the tragedy and after their adult children had long passed away.
