Hello again; As you begin to see in this article, the cost of defending our country is sometimes paid for with other things of value besides the almighty dollar. This incident is only the beginning of the mental complications for Russell Trall Hazzard. Interesting that he was offered but declined the Medal of Honor. "A SOLDIER SHOULD PERFORM ALL DUTIES ASK OF HIM WITHOUT SPECIAL RECOGNITION" I can add nothing to his statement. Don Coatney HAZZARD SENT TO HOSPITAL Physicians Find Mind of Young Officer with Good Record, Affected (Milwaukee Daily Free Press) Lieutenant R. T. Hazzard, of the seventh infantry stationed at Detroit, has been sent to the general hospital at San Francisco, after medical examinations by the army physicians who found that his mind was affected, a result of illness contracted during arduous service in the Philippine Islands. Wm. Hazzard, of Milwaukee, accompanied his brother from Detroit to Chicago yesterday, on his way to San Francisco. Charges had been made against Lieut. Hazzard at Detroit of Inferior infractions of army discipline. Owing to the mental condition of Lieut. Hazzard, these charges will be dropped. Lieut. Hazzard has the most brilliant record of any young army officer in Uncle Sam's service. He has a long record of engagements in the Philippines and among them the participation in the capture of Aguinaldo and the famous capture of the deserter, Atruro Howard, in the Island of Mindano. In order to capture Howard, Lieut. Hazzard with one companion went more than a mile into the camp of the insurrectoes and took Howard out of a bamboo house, practically from the center of his native army. For this feat Lieut. Hazzard was recommended for a medal of honor, but he declined to accept the medal saying that a soldier should perform all duty asked of him without special recognition. When charges were made against Lieut. Hazzard, many brother officers and others high in civil life would not believe him guilty. They believed that if he had broken any army regulations he could not be responsible. The outcome of this belief on the part of those who looked into the case was a medical examination with the result duly set forth. Among those who interested themselves in the case were Secretary of War Taft, Senator Smith of Michigan, Senator Hopkins of Illinois, Senator LaFollette of Wisconsin and Governor [?]urrie of New Mexico.
