Author: w1baker Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.scott/2106.2.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Sorry, Bill. I was responding to the request about John W. McAdams. This is from "Memoirs of the lower Ohio valley" Volume 1, page 208 (for anyone who hasn't yet seen it): "GEORGE W. STONER, recorder of Clark county, Jeffersonville, Ind., is a descendant of one of the oldest families in that section of the state. His great-grandfather, Valentine Stoner, was one of four brothers who came from Germany prior to the Revolutionary war. Upon reaching this country they separated, each settling in a different colony. Valentine served in the Continental army during the Revolution, being at the battle of Lexington, the first outbreak of the war. After the war was over he came West and settled in what is now Clark county. His son, Jacob Stoner, the grandfather of George W., was born after the family came to the county. During his infancy he was hidden in a hollow log to escape the Indians the time of the Pigeon Roost massacre. At the time of his death he owned nine farms of eighty acres each - one for each of his children. Alfred Stoner, the father of the subject of this sketch, was born in Clark county in 1829 and died there in 1900. There are now some ! of the sixth generation from Valentine Stoner living in the county. George W. Stoner is of the fourth generation and was born on his father's farm, Oct. 9, 1862. He received his education in the public schools and after leaving school engaged in farming and buying timber, continuing in these occupations until elected recorder of the county in 1902. Mr. Stoner has been actively identified with the Democratic party ever since he attained his majority and his election to the office of recorder was but the well merited reward of a faithful supporter of Democratic principles. He took charge of the office in 1903 and is now serving the second year of his four years' term. In 1881 he was married to Miss Maggie B. Dismore, the daughter of one of Scott county's representative citizens. Her father, Richard Dismore, is a son of Nathaniel Dismore, who came over from Ireland in 1798 and settled near Clark's Fort on the Ohio river. There are now some of the fifth generation of his desc! endants living in the counties of Scott and Clark. To Mr. and Mrs. Sto ner there have been born the following children: Elmer, Arthur, Ethel, Bertha, George Dewey, Mattie and Maggie B." Author: martock Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.scott/2106.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Yes, Emma "Emily" J. Stoner was the daughter of Alfred and Melvina F. Stoner. As Wendy has correctly surmised, Emma was, in fact, married and quickly divorced from John W. McAdams. John William McAdams remarried after the divorce and moved to Spencer County, Kentucky, with his new bride. Emma married second husband Thomas J. LaMaster, had several children, and is buried in Sellersburg Cemetery, Clark County, Indiana. I am a descendant of Alfred and Melvina through Emma's brother John E. Stoner. Please contact me for further information on dates, names, relationships for this Stoner/McAdams union at martock(at)comcast.net. Author: w1baker Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.scott/2106.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Bits and pieces of information: John W. McAdams marred Emma J. Stoner on 10 January 1876 in Scott County, Indiana. In the 1870 census "Ella J.", age 11, is living with Alfred and Melvina Stoner in Clark County, Indiana. In the 1880 census, "Mollie McAdams", age 20, is living with Alfred and Melvina Stoner in Scott County, Indiana. That could have been a nickname, or it could have been the census taker's (or transcriber's) error, as her 3-year-old daughter "Mollie" is listed below her. 20-year-old Mollie (or whoever gave the information) told the census taker that she was a widow. If true, then John W. died between 1876 and 1880. (I only say 'if true', because one of my great-grandmothers divorced three men in her lifetime, and told the census taker that she was 'widowed'.) You can read an account of her brother, George W. Stoner, on google-books under "Memoirs of the Lower Ohio Valley: Personal and Genealogical, Vol. 1." If John W. died before 1880, he may have left a will, or there might be probate records, especially since he left an infant daughter. If you haven't checked the records, either contact the Scott County Clerk, or order the films from the Family History Library. If he didn't, and there was a divorce instead, then there is a good case that John W., the son of William and Anna McAdams of Scott County, is the one you are looking for. Good hunting!
