Married Martha (Pastsy) Pepper, born 1780 in Maryland, on June 18, 1799 in Worcester Co., Maryland. Jonathon's parents were William and Ann Mary Maddux. You are correct about Elizabeth Wallace appearing with Jessie & Nancy Hull on that 1870 census. However, I don't have a thing on her. As for Orrin, I have him married to Mary A. Dunn, and they had 2 children (at least that's all I know of)Emma and David. I show nothing on Emma. David married Flora E. ???? and they had 3 children...Irby, Hubert and Hallie...I have nothing else on the children. I am also at a dead end on Jessie Lewis Hull....have not been able to find his parents or exact birth place. Have a lot of information on Nancy's family. I also do not know where Jessie and Nancy are buried. If I can help you further, let me know. You are welcome to any information I have. Sorry I couldn't help further on this. Author: msmindyr1 Surnames: Hull Wallace Goss Maines Mains Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.ripley/293.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Myrna -- I am looking for more information about Jesse Lewis Hull and his son, Orrin Hull. An old family legend says that my gg grandmother, Elizabeth Wallace, was dropped off at the Hull's home when she was a child. We believe that she was a Native American. Some say that she may have been taken from her family. She may have been travelling with gypsies. Some say that when she was left with the Hulls that the people said they would be back for her but they never came. The Hulls became attached to her and raised her as their own -- either Jesse & Nancy did or Orrin. The 1870 Census of Ottercreek Township, Ripley, Indiana shows Jesse and Nancy living with "Aaron" age 31 and Elizabeth Wallace age 9 born in North Carolina. In 1877, Elizabeth married Alonzo Goss (my gg grandfather). I have their marriage certificate showing Alonzo marrying "Anna Hull". In subsequent records that I've found Anna is listed as "Anna Elizabeth", "Elizabeth", or (in birth records of her children) "Elizabeth Wallace". Do you have any information, stories, pictures, documents that could corroborate this legend? Any help would be greatly appreciated. My family is very eager to figure this out. thanks! mindy maines richie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I was never told what the name of the cemetery was, only that it was an old German cemetery. The old house that we visited was near the border of Switzerland and Ripley counties, so I'm not even sure which county it is in. The only directions I have now is that it was up the hill on Iceburg Road. We were only able to drive part of the way. Once we got to the area where a creek bed actually went over the road, we had to walk the rest of the way. We almost gave up thinking we were on the wrong track when we finally found it. There was a small iron gate with no name, and probably 20 to 30 graves (inscribed on old German). The family I am researching is Hemesath, and there was a grave for Caroline Hemesath there. Since visiting there, I have also discovered that other surnames in their family are Steffen and No! esekabel. I would be interested to know if there are any other graves with these names. At the time we were there I did not expect to be walking a cemetery and had not taken anything to jot down info on. I do have a couple of pictures if you think that might help you. I recently tried Google Earth to see if I could find the cemetery, but had no luck (although I did see Iceburg Road). I know this is not much to go on, but if you can shed any light on this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. And you are good! Ethel Wanda Preble is my husbands grandmother...that's how we knew her mother was a Myers! LOL:) His uncle thinks she and husband Fred may be buried in Oakdale Cemetery, but his family relations are not so good, so I can't really ask more... I was lucky to have the chance once! Sent to the historical society for Toph papers that mentioned her, but that was in connection with her husband, Fredus (Fred) Preble and didn't mention her origins. I did the same thing with the variations of Minnie and also found nothing. I never thought about Ethel. I do have access to Ancestry and I'll look into the Ethel Myers possible connection some more. Almost made the trip to Ripley County (I'm about 4 hours away) but nixed it when I saw the library's hours (a long trip for such a bit of time and I can't overnight!). They were very helpful there when I ordered the Toph papers, I should probably see if they can help me with Minnie as well. You all are very blessed to have had that Violet Toph in your midst...she sounds like an extraordinary person! Must be in the air down there...thank you so much! :) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I don't know whether it would be in Switzerland or Ripley County, and I don't know the name of the cemetery. Several years ago I visited an old family homestead near Cross Plains and also a nearby German Cemetery where one of my Hemesath ancestors is buried. She died in 1890. The cemetery was way out on Iceburg road. It can probably only be reached by walking or some sort of all terrain vehicle. There is a section of Iceburg Road that has a dry (at that time) creekbed running across it. We walked from there, and it was quite a walk. The cemetery is visible from the road and has about 20 to 30 graves; many if not all of the headstones were in German. There was a small iron gate in front of the cemetery. Are you aware of this cemetery, or do you have any idea what the name of the cemetery could be? We were just told it was an old German cemetery. I would be very interested if you ever have the chance to read this cemetery. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It would be great if anyone that has obits or info such as parents, wives etc. to contact me and i can add it to the memorials. Some of these stones are just about gone and this may be the last chance that we have to document them. Please feel free to email me at [email protected] and put findagrave in the subject line. Also if u know of any family cemeteries or any that are hidden away Please! email me and let me know about it. We have already been taken to one that is completely unrecognizable with no way to document it or even mark it.
