Abram is my g g grandfather and was a civil war vet and POW for the 39th Indiana Infantry Co D. I have lots of good information about Abram but that is where it stops. I know there is a scrap of information that will prove the family stories I just have to keep looking. Abram had 7 brothers and sisters of which he is the oldest. His father Strawder (Stroder, Strother) Long was born in Indiana in 1808 possibly in Ripley Co but maybe not. Now his father is Abraham Long born in Virgina in 1774. If I could find any information about this line of Longs' I would be eternally indebted to whoever helped. Perhaps a hint on where to search or special places to do research any help would be terrific!!! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello Ripley, I hope someone can help me with my ultimate brick wall. My ggg- grandparents lived in Otter Creek for the 1840 census. Simeon Williams was born in Stonington CT in 1763 and his wife Tirzah (possible surname Knight) was born in MA or CT around the same time. They came to Ripley around 1835 from Butler County Ohio after living in Essex County NY and Windsor County Vermont. They probably married in Hartland VT (no record) and some of their older children were born in VT while the younger ones were born in NY (no birth records on any.) A family letter dated 1896 stated that Simeon died circa 1847 and Tirzah a few years later (I can't find her in the 1850 census.) Some of their children still lived in Ripley at that time. It is this family letter which gives Tirzah's maiden name as Knight and describes her family as involved in the judiciary in the CT River Valley (which state though is unclear.) There is no Knight family that fits that description in CT and a few in VT that have judges in the family don't have a daughter named Tirzah. I have also explored similar surnames in case there was a transcription error in the old letter (Wright, Knights, Wight, White, etc.) And I have tried the many spelling variations of Tirzah. I really would like to find Tirzah's maiden name. Here's a rundown of the avenues I have explored. I tried to obtain death certificates for all her children. Only 2 lived long enough in their localities to have records. One, my gg-grandmother Sarah (Williams) Doolittle, had an 1889 d.c. in Rush IN and it gave her father's name but not her mother's. The other child Adin, was in the 1880 census in Santa Ana, which was then Los Angeles County CA. Neither LA or Orange County CA have a death record for him. I also looked for obituaries for her children and the only ones I could find did not mention parents' names. A cousin has been through the LDS microfilms of Church records for Hartland VT, where they probably married. They are not listed in the Barbour Collection of CT marriage records. If they married in MA, I would have to know the town (and I have already checked several likely possibilities.) I have written to the Ripley County Historical Society for research into wills, estate inventory, probate and land records, hoping for a clue to her maiden name. If anyone has heard of this family and maybe has an old bible laying around, that would be great. Otherwise, any suggestions are welcome. Kate from Maryland

Hi Diana; I have about 21 Brooks listed in my family so far. No Samuel yet. My earliest is Wm Brooks Sr. b. 1781 in VA, & m. before 1829, next is Wm. Brooks Jr. b. 1829 in IN. m. Angeline Martindale. They had a dau. Minerva Alice Brooks who m. Jefferson Martin who are my gg-grandparents. My Browns came from MD to Noble Co., OH to Brown Co., IN. My Grandmother was a Brown & we have a slew of them. A lot of the folks came up thru Jefferson Co (some of my line went from Jefferson Co., IN. to Franklin Co., IN before coming to Hancock Co.) They all seemed to be there between 1826 & 1850. Some of my surnames are: Cowan, Curry, Dowdy, Martin, Young, Christy, Lewis, Martindale, Kiester, Bridges, etc. Thanks for your inquiry.......Wish I could be more help to you. Carolyn Cowan O. Looking at what I show as the parents of Lucy Hill Eaton. Lucy was born February 15, 1786 in New Lebanon, Columbia, New York an died April 26, 1865 in Washington Township, Ripley, Indiana. She had been the wife of Arad Knaapp and the mother of Squire Hill Knapp. I showed her parents as Hiram Hill Eaton and Catherine Jones (also seen as Janes and James). The strangest thing though is that I find obn the Ripley County GenWeb site the marriage of Hiram Eatoin and Catherine Janes listed in Ripley County on December 24, 1835. This is very strange. I have Hill Knapp born to Arad Knapp and Lucy Hill Eaton in 1810 in New York state. Squire Hill Knapp I show died on June 9, 1902. I think there has to be two sets of people here. The dates are too far off to bew just mistakes. Also the Ripley County wedding of Hiram and Catherine is in the wrong state and 55-60 years too late. This is very strange. Any ideas? Glad to take anything. Bob Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
