The census taker decided if they were born in In he put down the county name instead of just the state.I have found lots of info on Jackson and he has a brother named Harrison. I also saw Jackson and Harrison in the 1840 Jackson twnshp Ripley In census right next to each other.Take a look at the 1850 Crawford co, Boone twnsp, Alton census under the name MIARS. 1. [Ripley Co IN] SMITH, JOHNSON, JENNINGS, CLARK, SUNMAN, ROBERTS
    2. I have not posted in a long time so here is my information: SMITH !!!! Oh what fun this has been! :-( John Conrad Smith m. Elizabeth JOHNSON in Ripley county - moved to Indianapolis after 1850 William Smith m. Sarah JENNINGS in Ripley county - moved to Iowa after 1850 I know the two above are brothers and these may be other siblings: Henry Smith m. Phoebe CLARK - moved to Spencer county in IN Jacob Smith m. Sarah unknown - cannot find after 1850 Adah Smith m. Richard SUNMAN Mary Smith - born 1833 and died young. I am only guessing about these additional siblings, but they were all born in PA and list their parents birthplaces as PA and Ireland as did John and William. Also, at some point they were in the carpentry business. I included them because of their age and the burial of Mary whose tombstone says she was the daughter of JACOB AND J SMITH. I am only assuming that JACOB and J SMITH were the parents of all the siblings. I base this also on the fact they all lived in Adams Township, fairly close to each other around the area of Penntown. I have looked at JACOB's will and he only mentions one son, JOHN SMITH. Although he doesn't mention any other children, I have disco vered that wills do not always list every family member. John was also the oldest and the only one married when Jacob passed away. I realize I could also be making a lot of wrong assumptions and wish I could document the parents of John C. and William Smith. I have ties with other family members to the surnames: CLARK, JOHNSON, and JENNINGS. I am also researching SAMANTHA D. ROBERTS, born 1821 in Ohio, parents born in Maine. Do not know her parents' names. Joy Goodwin

    3. Jane, Thank you. I believe I have enquire about your Samuel before, perhaps with others, simply because Laughlin is a rather unusual name, although we seem to see "McLaughlin" often enough. Have to wonder if they may have been cousins of some sort, and maybe his father came over after hearing some report that the country was good. We'll probably never know the answer to that possibility! 3. Bryce, I don't think so as Samuels father came from Ireland and married a woman from New York. Samuel was also married twice- the last time in the early 1900's. I can find no record of his father or mother or his earlier marriage. I am assuming he was born in Ripley county or close by as he married there. He was only a poor farmer so it is hard to find info on him! My great great grandparents, Benjamin Hyatt and Caroline Jane Wellman Hyatt, were living in Delaware Twp., Ripley Co., IN in 1850, with the Allen Burton family on one side and Isaac Levi on the other (per household numbers). 1850 Ripley Co, IN , Delaware Twp. 86/86 Allen Burton, age 55, Male, Farmer, vvalue of real estate $500, born KY Nancy, age 66, Female, born VA Nancy Jane Hendrickson, age 7 Female, born IN 87/87 Benj Hyatt, 40, M, Laborer, NY Caroline Jane, 36, F, OH Levi Perry, 17, M, Laborer, KY (Levi named after his great grandfather?) Francis Warren, 15, M, OH Nancy Ann, 12, F, OH (Nancy named after her grandmother?) Nathaniel Wylie, 9, M, OH Sarah Jane, 7, F, OH James Morton, 4, M, IN Martha Jane, 3, F, IN Margaret Laurinda, 5/12, F, IN Mary Laurinda, 5/12, F, IN 89/89 Isaac Levi, 114, M, revolutionary Pensioner, $600, Hungary Mary, 49, F, VA Benj. Tucker, 14, M, KY Martha Green, 57, M, Farmer, $800, KY Caroline's maiden name came from her obituary published in The Mattoon Gazette, Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois, Friday November 19, 1897 Carolina Jane WELLMAN was born at Cincinnati, O., April 2, 1810, and died November 13, 1897, aged 87 years. She was married at the age of 18 to Benjamin HYATT, ten children being born to them, three sons and three daughters survive. After their marriage she and her husband moved to Indianapolis and resided there until 1860 when they came to Coles county, her husband dying in 1874. Mrs. Hyatt was a thorough and devout christian and honored as such by all her friends. The funeral services were conducted at the house by Rev. S. G. Battenfield, of the Christian church, and the interment took place at Dry Grove cemetery Sunday. A note written by my aunt in the 1940s states that Sally HYATT’s grandfather was named BURTON. Sally Hyatt was Sarah Jane Hyatt, daughter of Benjamin and Caroline Jane, so this suggests that Caroline Jane's father was a BURTON. I have found the following marriages: Northern Kentucky Marriages, 1795-1850 : LEVY, Nancy & WELMAN, James, 03 Feb 1803, Kentucky, Harrison County Marriages of Campbell, Boone and Kenton Counties, Kentucky, 1795-1850: BURTON, Allen & Nancy WELMON, 19 Apr. 1814, m by RS, b (bondsmen?) Joseph Smith & Abraham Levi, Campbell Co., KY This suggests to me that Caroline's mother may have been Nancy "LEVY" who married James "WELMAN", that James died and Nancy "WELMON" married Allen BURTON, but I can find no other proven family to research. Some descendants are supposed to have Cherokee heritage. My autosomal DNA, tested a few years ago, shows that I am 94% Europena. 5% East Asian and 1% Native American (or 6% Native American). I continue to hope that someday I can find proof, one way or the other, of whether I am descended from Isaac Levi and one of his spouses. Gwen Boucher

    3. I will tell you that I don't make my trees public for several reasons. I am a professional genealogist and I don't want someone taking advantage of all my hard work for no return. Second, I use the trees as a means to communicate to clients easily what I have found and keep it in a central place; the client has the choice of sharing the tree with others, since he/she is the one paying for it. Third, many times what I have in the tree is theories that I am looking to prove (because having it in the tree makes it easier to do repetitive searches), and again I don't want someone taking something I post as gospel unless I can back it up with facts. Fourth, if I have living people in a tree, I do not want to have the tree public, period. That being said, I do appreciate those who post family stories and make them public because I can often find leads to other information. Anything I find on the internet (or in any other resource) gets examined for veracity before I put it into a tree. And I REALLY appreciate those who put copies of original records into their tree. If someone is looking at someone in my tree and sends a request for information, I try really hard to respond as quickly and thoroughly as I can. I do share data from my personal research. Following another reply to this email, My Ripley county connection goes way back. My g-grandparents were both born in Ripley County, Frank Robert Wilson (1881-1969) and Leora M. Heaton (1882-1956). Frank was the son of Robert Pollock Wilson (1838-1924) and Margaret Zwickel (1846-1924). Robert was the son of Goff Moore Wilson (1811-1839) and Amanda Johnson (1820-1883). Goff was the son of Ammi Willson (1783-1858) and Betsy Moore (1787-1862) who came to Ripley/Dearborn in 1817 or so from Maine. Amanda Johnson was the daughter of Roswell Johnson (1769-1837), the first treasurer of Ripley County, and Polly Barnett (1788-1844) who came to Ripley Co. from Montgomery County VA in about 1815. Margarret Zwickel was the daughter of Jacob Zwickel (1812-1872) and Margaret Hess (1820-1890) who came to Ripley in 1846 (Margaret was born there) from Germany--they were relative latecomers. Leora Heaton was the daughter of William Freeman Heaton (1854-1888) and Matilda Stevens (1855-1885). William was the son of Philo Heaton (1827-1891) and Elizabeth Graves (1838-1911). Philo was the son of Ebenezer Heaton (1797-1879) and Sarah Streeter (1801-1863). Ebenezer and Sarah came to Dearborn/Ripley counties about 1818 from Greene County, NY. I have no background on Elizabeth Graves prior to 1850 when she is listed in the Eben Heaton household in Dearborn. Matilda Stevens was the daughter of Sylvester Stevens (1812-1896) and Caroline Daughters (1827-1899). Sylvester was the son of Obediah Stevens who fought in the War of 1812 from Ohio and is in Ripley shortly thereafter. Caroline was the daughter of Gillis Daughters (1793-1834) and Sarah Messick (1801-1872). Anyone with questions please contact me on or off list. 3. > > Re: I wish members with private trees and stories that have not > logged on in 6 months should have to let other people use access > their information. I am between a rock and a hard place! > > Regarding the recent post above about list subscribers sharing information, maybe those of us new to the board (like me) could give their earliest Ripley ancestors and a brief summary of what information they need. Then we each might find some common thread or collateral ancestor line that would be helpful. Or maybe your most recent Ripley ancestor, if your folks have not lived in Ripley in a while. And for those of us new to the board, it would be helpful to know who else is out there looking in Ripley--I don't know what you have posted in the past, so a refresher might help us all. I will make a first attempt: Simeon Williams (born 1763 in Stonington CT, died in Ripley c. 1847) and his wife Tirzah (born c. 1765 in MA, died in Ripley c. 1850) came to Ripley around 1835 with some of their adult children. They lived in Otter Creek in the 1840 census. They came most recently from Butler County Ohio, and from Moriah, Essex County NY in 1810, and Hartland, Windsor County VT in 1790. Tirzah's maiden name may have been Knight (this is a HUGE brick wall for me.) Simeon and Tirzah's children and inlaws who lived in Ripley were: 1. Susan Williams Knapp (1795- < 1850) and husband Charles Knapp (2nd wife was Abigail Cooper.) Susan's children were: Terzah Ann (1819 - 1902) married David Laing, had 3 children. Adin Williams, (1824 - 1905) married Sarah Parmelia Cady, had 10 children. Susan, married David Hastings, had 4 children. Lucinda, (1828- > 1880) married Hiram Cady, had 6 children Mary (1830-1900) married Erastus McMinds, had 5 children Sarah (1829 > 1870) 2. Dyer Williams (1790-1876) married Orenda Burr, briefly in Ripley before moving to Muscatine Iowa, they had 9 children. 3. Dudley Williams (1792- > 1850) 4. Lois Williams (1792 - 1870) mar. 1st Ezekiel Nelson, 2nd James Cameron, 3rd Gideon Cummins (they lived in Otter Creek, Ripley IN in 1850) and 4th Mr. Ross. 5. Sarah Williams (1806-1889) married Joel Doolittle and lived in Decatur IN. They had 4 children. 6. Adin Dyer Williams (1810 - > 1880) married Mary Ann McLean or Elkin, lived in Otter Creek in 1840, Jackson twp Ripley IN in 1850, moved to Iowa, then California. He had 5 children. Surnames in the post: Williams, Knight, Knapp, Cooper, Cady, Laing, McMinds, Nelson, Cameron, Cummins, Ross, Doolittle, Elkin, McLean Happy hunting, Kate
