The lake by the Funk's Speedway was bought in the '40s by a group of ten men from Winchester and my father (Bruce Maxwell) was the first to build a summer home there. The property had previously been the sight of an amusement park complete with skating rink, swimming area and I don't know what all. I do not know what it was named previously but since the purchase in the '40s it has been known as The Timbers.
Looking for something to do with the family when you come here to do genealogy research??? Prairie Days 2008 at the Shawnee Prairie Preserve in Greenville, OH (Darke County). They have posted pictures. www.flickr.com/groups/dcparks/ I missed it once again this year, but what neat pictures. Anyone coming to Randolph County who enjoys pioneer history would also enjoy visiting the Preserve as well. They have a morning hike on Tuesdays all year (8am), they have a log cabin built a few years ago, that is open during the warmer Sundays in the summer, plus the Prairie Days as well. I've even taken knitting lessons in the log cabin. They started a historical garden by the log cabin, and they meet as a group "The Olde Thyme Gardeners". Focusing on gardening practices of 1800-1820 for the garden next to the log cabin. They meet the 2nd Monday of each month at noon. So there is lots of "pioneer" things to participate in plus, take a hike and enjoy the woods and meadows there. http://www.darkecountyparks.org/ Andrea
