    3. To the person, who asked about photographs, my grandfather was taken by his father in 1855 to Hagerstown, IN, for a photograph, which I have in my possession. They lived near the present town of Modoc, Randolph Co., IN. I don't know why they went to Hagerstown rather than Winchester or Economy, unless neither place had a photographer. In 1855, Modoc hadn't yet been founded and Economy was a booming little town. By the way, the photo is a rather large one and is a tintype. My grandfather, Allen Riley Barnett, wrote his life's story for his children, when he was 78 years old and I'm going to quote his description of this photography session. ". . . Before he started back to Iowa he took me down to Hagerstown and had my picture taken. I was then about six years old and, this being my first experience in this line, I could not help feeling a bit nervous. The picture man set me in a chair and adjusted a forked prop to the back of my head. He then pinned a piece of red ribbon to the wall and told me to keep my eyes on it and not move a muscle for sixty seconds for if I did it would spoil the picture. I managed to fill the program and got a good picture. Father took the picture back to Iowa with him and I did not see it again until I came out to Missouri." Jennie Barnett Vertrees
