Zion Cemetery is located just east of the County Infirmary and then three-quarters of a mile south. Many of the early grave markers are ordinary boulders picked up in a nearby field or taken from the river bottom. Some of them are marked with the initials of the deceased, others have no mark whatever to designate the names of those who rest there. The first burial there was Ursula Wheeler, who died May 4, 1841. As one wanders about this little well-kept cemetery reading the inscriptions on the monuments he soon realizes that many of those who rest there were born in the second century before ours, while other names recall to memory those with whom we mingled. - Written in 1940.
