Is anyone working on the surname Reid, Reed or Read? I have found my line spelled each way on various documents. I am trying to piece together information on Jerry and Rebecca Puckett Reid, and their families. Jerry Reid's death record states his father was Dempsey Reed from North Carolina. I have two different marriage records for Dempsey, North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868 Bride: Basheba Dolby Groom: Dempsey Reed Bond Date: 02 Mar 1829 County: Northampton Record #: 01 170 Bondsman: Lazarus Cook Witness: Matt Calvert Bond #: 000091786 Indiana Randolph County MARRIAGE: Patterson Reed, Elizabeth Dempsey Spouse: Patterson, Elizabeth Reed, Dempsey Marriage Date: 15 Sep 1836 I have been looking at the census records and there are several Dolby's from North Carolina, I found Dempsey Read on the 1840 White River Township Census, but nothing for 1850. 1840 Randolph County White River Township, Indiana Census Page 8. Dempsey Read Head of Families. Free Colored Persons 2 Males Under 10, 1 Male 24-35, 3 Females Under 10, 1 Female 10-24. Zachariah Dolby and his family is listed on Page 8, One family is between them. The Dolby's are listed as Free Colored Persons also. 1830 Buncombe County, North Carolina Census Page 269. Dempsey Reed Head of Families Free Colored Persons 2 Males Under 10, 1 Male 24--36, 1 Female 55-100. I believe they were Indian, my father remembers seeing a photo of an Indian in his Civil War Uniform when he was little. I am trying to find someone to share info with, on any of these families. Rebecca Reid's parents are listed as Garrett and Mary Puckett, the spelling is different on her death record. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Gina in Muncie
