Brown, that it says "taken to raise". So, he was certainly not a child of Thomas and Catherine Bryant. So, it certainly appears that William was a Brown. Did William marry in Indiana? You could obtain a copy of his marriage "application", which should list his parents names. Also, have you checked the Jay County court records for anything which may have given guardianship of William to the Bryant's? Answers could well be in those court records.
