    3. I researching my Grandmother Pauline Kittle, or maiden name was Hizer and she lived in Randolph. Ohio county during the 1920 census. Her father was George E Hizer and her mother is listed as only Maggie. I have seen the image of the census on ancestry.com, George lists his name as ‘Hizer’, who ever transcribed it though lists it as Heyer. The members of the house hold are: George E Heyer 50 Maggie Heyer 47 Harry G Heyer 23 Earnest Heyer 18 Mildred Heyer 15 Pauline Heyer 13 ß- Grandma Kittle Ethel Heyer 8 <- Aunt Ethel Any clues to the line past George, and also what Maggie’s maiden name was, would be appreciated Thanks

    3. Hello Everyone, I am forwarding an email I received off list about strange things happening at Steubenville - Cherry Grove Cemetery or McVey Woods. The person is wanting to know if anyone else has had some issues when visiting the cemetery or the McVey Woods. I told them I would forward the email to the list and see if any of you listers that are local have had any problems too. The last time me and my sons were out there we found a geo cache in the hollowed out tree stump and we did notice a young man dressed as if he were hunting, he walked through the cemetery towards the back and on into the woods. But we didn't see anything spelled out in sticks or hear any sounds, but I have never been back there after dusk either. Not because I am scared of cemeteries but that one in particular sets way back off the road and tends to be full of mosquitos. <G> Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! On several occasions we have found sticks compiled to form deliberate shapes such as arrows and/or words such as "LEAVE" written on the ground near the graveyard. Also, particularly at night, some odd sounds have been heard. A friend of a friend, who used to or currently still does tend to some of the landscaping there claims that despite the area being a public park there is an old local who is trying to scare people away by harassing them by making strange sounds and writing the aforementioned words. I don't know the truth of this myself, but have seen what appeared to be two men in a grass suits (aka, ghillie suits) stalking the area. Either way, I'm not enquiring about "ghosts and goblins" or anything like that, but I am curious to know if you have experienced any similar incidents, or heard any other reports of such things. It has caused my friends and I some concern since last summer when these sorts of things first began to occur, as we have frequented McVey woods since high school and never experienced anything similar up until that time. Any information you could provide would be very helpful indeed. It is a historic site, and the last I knew it was still very open for the public to enjoy, and whoever is out there, I fear, may be trying to ruin that experience for everyone. Thanks...

    3. Hi List, I am hunting for information on Hettie Ann Chandler, last known married to a Mr. Frederick and living in Muncie on January 29, 1925. She grew up in Farmland and lived there a lot of her life so I thought she might be buried in Randolph County. Hettie Ann was born on April 12, 1857 in Farmland to John Chandler and Elizabeth Thornburg Chandler. She was also married to George W. Wolfe on August 18, 1877, in Randolph County and had a child Ainey C.D. Wolfe (this is probably wrong spelling but how it shows on the census), born about 1879 and then married Richard M. Connarroe (Connorroe, Conrow, what is the proper spelling? I've seen it on documents all three ways) on August 12, 1886, also in Randolph County. She then married Michael Lutz on April 9, 1899 in Delaware County. Michael Lutz died on January 28, 1916, so she would have married Mr. Frederick between 1916 and 1925; well, presuming the marriage lasted anyway, I guess. I have not been able to find Mr. Frederick's first name or their marriage or Hettie's date of death or burial place. Thanks so much for any information anyone can help me with. 3. I'm not sure what in this quest that the museum would have. You might contact Monisa to ask her. I'm in SC right now so I can't run into the museum right now to look. I wonder if the architect is listed on deeds/building permits?? I know I've seen some of the buildings that Billy mentioned, but not all. I looked through the 1908 directory, and George is listed as an architect there, but his name is not in CAPS so he did not advertise himself in the book. http://www.pceaze.com/genealogy/RandCoIN/1908RCIDir/UC_Dir_108109x.html Same with Gettinger. http://www.pceaze.com/genealogy/RandCoIN/1908RCIDir/UC_Dir_100101x.html Hummmm. Monisa's e-mail is found on the museum website. www.randolphcountyindianahistoricalsociety.org Andrea

Below is what I have on Mr. Gettinger. Billy Union City Evening Times, Tuesday, November 8, 1938 History of Union City Architecture Was Credited To Hampton Gettinger Of This City. - Built Many Buildings And Churches In And Around This Part Of Two States. "Wm. Hampton Gettinger attended the schools of his neighborhood until 1865 and learned the carpenter's trade in his immediate neighborhood where he worked until 1880, constructing for all kinds of building from 1874 onward. "He was born an architect and crafting was an instinct. In 1875 he took the contract for the Union City Christian Church which he completed in 1876 and also finished a number of equally good contracts. "In 1880 he settled down to a systematic course of studying the science of architecture, and read all the standard works acquiring a thorough knowledge of architecture without the aid of tutor or preceptor. He visited the principal cities of Indiana and Ohio, studied all the models and better class of structures, and in 1885 began drawing plans and then taking contracts. Among his earlier achievements were the Kelly Block at Winchester, the school building at Harrisville, the Union City Public School at a cost of $35,000 in modern renascence, with 12 rooms and offices and all in brick with stone trimmings, and considered by school men as one of the best in the state, taking cost into consideration. He really began the work of an architect in 1880 since when he has furnished plans for the Catholic Church, Union City in Gothic of the 12th century cost of $20,000; a schoolhouse at Dunkirk and Briscoe Block at Hartford, 100x120; The Catholic Church at Muncie, Gothic, 12th century, $35,000; Anderson Catholic Church, modern Romanesque, $37,000; the Marion Catholic Church, early English, about $20,000; the New Light Christian Church at Ansonia, Ohio, $4,500. He has also made numerous plans for many other buildings in Indiana and Ohio." He was the architect for 13 Catholic Churches. He built the one at Elwood and he was always proud of its architecture. Churches in Union City, Catholic, Methodist, Christian, Presbyterian, United Brethren, also many of the finer residences, also many business places.
