Thanks, Cathy -----Original Message----- From: inrandol-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:inrandol-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of rebar1204@comcast.net Sent: Tuesday, October 14, 2008 5:08 PM To: inrandol@rootsweb.com Subject: [INRANDOL] Painter - R. Wolfe & Mills Lake Mills Lake is located in Maxville, Randolph Co., IN. The sign on Highway 32 does have " Mills Lake " on it. It was owned by Jacob R. "Jake" Mills, the brother of my great-grandfather. Jake had a cousin named Ralph Wolfe, however he was b. 1889 and d. 1937 which would not fit the date of your painting. The following article was in the scrapebook of my grandmother; Mills Lake In the late 1800s, Jake Mills formed a lake that was originally divided in four sections, each with a different kind of fish raised in it. Fed by Sparrow Creek, a small stream that flows into White River , Mills Lake borders the south side of a camp ground today, that is located in a grove of maple trees. A quite spot to day, it once housed a famous dance hall that for half a century was one of the best known night spots in East Central Indiana. People fron Anderson to Union City flocked to the lake on the Traction cars and in autos to hear name Bands and to dance to the latest crazes of the '20s, '30s, and '40s. Muskrats burrowed through the levys and the lake drained and stood empty for several years, but it has now been filled again and the spot once again hosts visitors, this time to a camp ground. Older residents of the area can remember cutting ice in the winter to be stored and used in the summer. Omer Rinard, nephew of Jake Mills told of his love for fishing and said that he remembers Jake going on fishing trips to get fish to stock his lakes. He would load several tanks on his horse drawn wagon, pack up his food and drive over to Celina , OH where he would stay several days stocking up on fish. He would keep fresh water in the tanks and bring back channel catfish, and dump them in one section of the lake. He would buy day-old bread to feed them. Logs were placed in the water to provide placed for the fish to lay their eggs. One section contained bass, and it took years to get a good crop of fish. About every three years to get a good crop of fish. About every three Jake would net them and sell them to the crowds at the dances. Sometimes they were given as door prizes. Following the sale, the lake would be stocked again, and after another three years, Jake would make a good amount of money, again. The lake's career as a fishery was ended one winter day when muskrats broke through one of the levies into the river, washing away most of the fish and draining the lake. It is said fishermen were catching large catfish for years afterward around Maxville. ******************************** Please Visit The Randolph County INGenWeb Project http://www.ingenweb.org/inrandolph/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to INRANDOL-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

I've even taken knitting lessons in the log cabin. They started a historical garden by the log cabin, and they meet as a group "The Olde Thyme Gardeners". 3. The lake by the Funk's Speedway was bought in the '40s by a group of ten men from Winchester and my father (Bruce Maxwell) was the first to build a summer home there. The property had previously been the sight of an amusement park complete with skating rink, swimming area and I don't know what all. I do not know what it was named previously but since the purchase in the '40s it has been known as The Timbers.

    3. Actually there is a lake, on back of the race track, this was all the Funk's land, Funk's Speedway (now the Winchester Speedway) and the lake further back that road is what was called Funk's Lake. Frank Funk had a Park back there. I was just talking with someone on Saturday who lives back there currently, he said that he has seen pictures of a giant slide that was back there during the hay day. http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=40.175283,-85.026305&spn=0.008689,0.01362 6&t=h&z=16 Yes there are family still there, Mr. Funk's son-in-law still lives there on the family property, and there are kids and grands living within a mile or two. I know the family personally, attend church with some, meetings of other kinds with others. I will see Eileen on Wed night, I will ask her to do a write up about the race track and the Lake. That would be nice to have. Your original posting said the painting was done in 1857, did you mean 1957? Can you scan it in and share? To bad Sue and I didn't know about this yesterday, we would of paid attention on our way home from a meeting last night! It is close to Farmland. http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=40.178873,-85.075035&spn=0.139024,0.21801 &t=h&z=12 maps.google has many places in Randolph County in wrong spots, like Mull, Brinkley, Shedville. So be careful when using them in reference when you are looking for a location near another location. But Maxville is in the right place here. Andrea
