    1. [INRANDOL] Mt. Zion Cemetery
    2. Billy J. Baker
    3. Mt. Zion Cemetery is located just east of the County Infirmary and then three-quarters of a mile south. Many of the early grave markers are ordinary boulders picked up in a nearby field or taken from the river bottom. Some of them are marked with the initials of the deceased, others have no mark whatever to designate the names of those who rest there. The first burial there was Ursula Wheeler, who died May 4, 1841. As one wanders about this little well-kept cemetery reading the inscriptions on the monuments he soon realizes that many of those who rest there were born in the second century before ours, while other names recall to memory those with whom we mingled. - Written in 1940. Below is a list of some of the early burials: Ursula Wheeler died May 4, 1841, aged 35 Yrs. 7 M & 16 d. Thomas Butts, died August 8, 1848, 70 years. W. E. 1. RE: [INRANDOL] FW: HB 1540
    2. Torres, Jane E
    3. Hello Gina and All, I have only received replies from a very few of them. One agreed, another told me that our interests were being take care by the amendment. The most lengthy correspondence has been from Dolly Starnes, Leadership Assistant, in the office of the Speaker of the House, Patrick Bauer. She spoke with Rep. Welch (sponsor of the bill) and forwarded her reply. Still my most pressing question is: HOW will I be differentiated from Tom, Dick and Harry (see answer to question #1)? I believe this is different than question 9, how will I receive the information. I would like to see this issue addressed before my opposition to the bill will be eased. Ms. Starnes wrote: From: Dolly Starnes [mailto:dstarnes@iga.state.in.us] Sent: Thursday, February 27, 2003 11:15 AM To: Torres, Jane E Subject: Re: HB 1540 Dear Ms. Torres I have spoken with Representative Welch the author of this bill. She has made a list of answers to the concerns most people have had. If there are anymore you need answered please contact me. 1. Access to records: It is not the goal of the state or local vital record registrars to prevent genealogists from having access to birth and death records. The goal is to prevent every Tom, Dick, and Harry off the street being able to view, transcribe, and/or get unofficial copies of birth and death records. 2. Loss of tourism dollars: Access to birth and death records by genealogists will be addressed in rules adopted by the State Department of Health. Folks from around the country will still be able to pursue their genealogy hobby. 3. Vital Record registrars just want less work: Local registrars have assured me that this is not the case. See #1. 4. "I should have free access to public records": IC 5-14-3-4 is a listing of public records that are excepted from disclosure. Some of those records are: medical records (Again, some regard vital records another type of medical record); library or archival records (the public cannot find out what books you have checked out from the library, but they can know personal facts about you and your family); release of certain lists of people for commercial purposes (a man in Marion County requested a copy of all Marion County birth records for 2000-the assumption was he wanted the records to do a commercial mailing. He would have been given the birth records as long as he paid the 25-cent per copy fee). 5. "I won't be able to afford the high fees to get records": There would be no charge for viewing the records and there would be the nominal charge for unofficial copies. There would be the standard fee for certified copies. 6. "I will have to pay a professional genealogist": The bill does not refer in any way to a genealogist having to be a professional. 7. Common complaint of inconsistencies in local health departments in the application of access to records: HB 1540 would provide that consistency and remove all uncertainty as to the rules for disclosure. 8. HB 1540 would not affect identity theft: It is true that most identity theft happens from people you know or from the theft of your billfold. Nonetheless, identity thieves are becoming more savvy, and as personal information becomes more valuable in the acquisition of new identities, birth and death records are a perfect place to acquire that information. 9. Suggestion to register genealogists: This seems to me to be a bit onerous. Again, it is not the goal to make it difficult for genealogists to get information. How they will get the information will be determined by promulgated rules. Let me repeat, I will personally monitor the rulemaking process. 10. "Maybe there is too much information on the records": It has been explained to me that every so often the records are reviewed for what kind of information is needed by the data collectors. Consistently, more information is required to be placed on the records. Sincerely Dolly Starnes Dolly Starnes Leadership Assistant Speaker B. Patrick Bauer 317-232-9628 200 W. 2. Don and Lucy Lussenden
    3. Hi Kay, I don't know if I responded to your message of 2001 or not. Anyway, I saved it on paper and am responding now. Samuel French and Esther Suey (Sooy) are ancestors of my husband. My husband's great-great grandmother was Elizabeth French, a daughter of Samuel and Esther (Suey) French. Esther married Joseph Gantz in Warren County, Ohio, north of Cincinnati in 1836. They moved to Randolph County in 1837 where they farmed and raised their family. They had several children, a few of whom were Lorenzo and Samuel (twins) born May 23, 1838, and John W. Gantz. These men joined the Indiana Volunteers and fought in the Civil War, where 2 of them died. Lorenzo married Sarah McCamish and one of their daughters was my husband's grandmother. All 3 of the Civil War veterans wrote letters home to their family. I have collected about 72 of them, typed them exactly as they were written, and published them in a hardcover book. The French family is mentioned several times, especially since some of the French men were fighting in the same regiments as the Gantz men from Indiana. Unfortunately, I am all out of the book in hardcover but am considering having it published again in paperback if I can get a reasonable price quote. Let me know if you would be interested in purchasing a copy. Do you have any photos of the French family members? We have none, and would be interested in seeing yours, if you have any. Thanks. Have a great day.
