Surviving are ... Oscar of Washington, D. C., Any idea if this Oscar Britt was married to Mabel Ethel Iliff and if he was born in 1886 and died in 1956? She was married to Oscar L. Britt and, I believe, lived in D. C. for a time. She was my wife's great aunt. I've never had any information about his family, but I recall hearing stories about "Aunt Mabel's" visits to Indiana from time to time. Are you researching any of the following families from Grant county? I have McDamiel, Householder, Ferguson, and Baugher surnames in Grant. My Cox family came from Delaware to Ohio then Randolph County. My Adams family was Quakers from NC. I think my Clevenger's came from Virginia they were Quaker also. Thank you for responding, Cathy. I'm trying to figure out a reason that my ancestor might have ended up in Des Moines, Iowa in the 30s. Recently someone posted a message or inquiry about their "Smith's" who moved to Des Moines...and I guess I deleted that post without thinking. I have Smith's from Indiana....and no information that they were ever in Iowa, but aside from the possibility of my illustrious (NOT) ancestor simply being footloose and fancy free, it seems to me that there had to be a reason he went to D.M.....and it makes sense that either he had relatives there, or was following WPA jobs. Jules
Jules, My answer doesn't really help you, but it may help some one else. My grandfather and family lived in Los Angeles, CA during the Depression. He was given work by the WPA and the job was in Los Angeles. He was put to work in the accounting dept. of a food commissary. He also was given a road repair job which was further away, but still in the Los Angeles area. Your question is a good one! Gets you thinking! Did they hire workers in the area where the worker lived, or did they hire them and send them where there was work to be done? I'm trying to figure out how one of my ancestors ended up in Iowa when he'd lived all of his life in Indiana...and I know that he was working for the WPA in the state of Iowa in the 1930s. I'm just wondering if he had another reason for making the move, or if he might have been sent to a different state because he was employed by the WPA at the time???? ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237
