I think this is the person you are looking for. All of these marriage took place in Randolph county. Mary Boltz married George W Harbick on 24 May 1861. Mary A Hobbick married David Favorite on 14 Mar l867. Mary Favorite married Eli T Hochstedler on 24 Apr 1879. These names are as transcribed by the WPA about 1939. You would have to look at the originals to be sure of the spelling. Appears there was a marriage you didn't know about. Good luck. Don

    3. Don - Thank you, I never tried the Mary Hobbick/David Favorite search, but I do have them in my unknown Hobbick file. Could you tell me what the WPA is? Is that something I could access? Again, thanks a million for the information. 1. [INRANDOL] Ervin / Irvin H. GARES m. Frances R. PATTERSON, 1901, Union City - children Ella S. and Angus P.

    3. Hoping that someone out there can help provide additional info on Ervin or Irvin H. GARES, born 1878 in Union City, Randolph Co, IN, son of Amos Bennett/Barnett GARES (mis-spelled often as GARRIS or GARIS, or even GEHRES, etc). Listed with family as 2 yrs old in 1880 US Census on familysearch.com. Ervin married Frances R. PATTERSON on 06 Mar 1901 in Indiana [Source: Indiana Marriage Records online at Ancestry.com]and had at least 2 children - Ella S. GARES, born December 17, 1902 in IN and Angus P. GARES, born 1905 in IN. This family moved to Illinois sometime before 1920. They appear in the 1920 US Census as living at 427 Indianapolis, Marion, IL where Ervin's occupation is listed as "painter, auto factory". By the Apr 1930 US Census, they were in Chicago in Ward 50, block 108, family 618 - an Ervin was still working as an auto painter. Thanks to research done by Tom Shawcross, I know that Ella GARES was married very briefly in 1920 to Roy Shawcross, but they divorced. My guess is that she re-married, but I haven't found any info about her, either as Ella GARES or as Ella SHAWCROSS. No info yet about what happened to any of them - does any of this sound familiar to anyone on the list? Many thanks in advance for any help or suggestions, Kaye Gares Steward

    1. [INRANDOL] GARES or GARRIS - F. Amos Bennett, wife Susan - 1875-present, Union City, Randolph Co, IN

    3. SURNAMES included in this message: GARES, GARIS, BROWN, REED, BOTHAST, VAN TREES, MANGAS, TIPPLE, KEEVER, WALL, STEIN, DREW, GREEN, PATTERSON, SHAWCROSS. (with apologies to list for the length of this message - I would be very grateful to those list members who could take a minute to scan the following to see if they have any connections or could add any more information.) A few months ago, I was sent some newspaper clippings about the family of my gr-grandfather's brother, F. Amos Bennett/Barnett GARES and wife Susan Jane KING who came to Union City in 1875. From the info in those clippings, I've pieced together an outline of the family and am researching the individual members to learn more about them - and hopefully to connect with living descendants and others researching this family. Below is a summary of what I've discovered. Since our branch of the GARES family went to Hawaii from Ohio, and then to Alberta, Canada, I don't have easy access to libraries and genealogy societies in Indiana -so I would really appreciate help from knowledgeable IN genies online with access to local history books, census indices, and other sources. Ben (or Amos) GARES (often mis-spelled as GARIS, GARRIS or even GEHRES) was born in Bucks Co, PA in 1834-35, but moved with his family to Franklin Co, OH (near Groveport and Columbus) where he married Susan Jane KING in 1858. Ben served in the Civil War, as a Corporal in the 2nd Battalion, Company H, 18th, US Infantry, enlisting March 1, 1862. Ben brought his wife and family to Union City in 1875, and they are listed as living there in the 1880 Census. Of their 12 children, 5 survived Ben when he died in 1911. I have been very fortunate to make contact with living descendants of his son Edward's family - but have not been successful yet in locating info on the families of the other 4 children, so there is still much work to do and I still need lots of help. (1) Kate -- born 1861 - married to B. F. (Ben) Brown, living in New Castle IN in 1911. This couple are listed in the 1880 Census as living in Union City where Ben worked in a packing house; no further info so far. (2) Edward - born 1866 - married to Sarah (Sadie, Sallie) REED, daughter of Finley R. and Alice Brandon REED). Had 3 daughters - (i) Mabel Nell, b. 1891, married to Harry P. Bothast, widowed, and married to John Van Trees, died 1978); (ii) Esther Reed, b. 1896, married to Clarence MANGAS - 3 daughters - Helen (Mrs. Lloyd TIPPLE) Martha Jane (Mrs. Ivan KEEVER) and Virginia Joan (Mrs. Verne WALL) and (iii) Dorothy - married to Reynaldo (Bud) Stein - son Richard G. STEIN and Carol Stein DREW. (3) Rollie (or Roll or Rolla) - born about 1868 - grew up in Union City, was living in Dayton OH when his father died in 1911, and living in Rochester NY when his brother Ed Gares died in Union City in 1942. No other info so far. (4) Belle (Florence Belle) - born May 27, 1870 - married to William R. GREEN in 1888, Living in Waynesville, OH when her father died in 1911. Have found a Belle and Wm. Green living with son Walter GREEN in Lima, Allen Co, OH in 1930 - could be same family. No other info so far. (5) Ervin or Irvin H. - born 1978 in Union City, married Frances R. PATTERSON in 1901, two children - Ella S. (married to Roy Shawcross for 3 months in 1920) and Angus P. (born 1905). No other info so far. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions. Kaye

MANGAS and Esther Reed GARES -- 1890s to present - mostly Union City, Wayne Twp. Seeking information about the descendants of Clarence B. MANGAS and Esther Reed GARES of Union City. I'm researching my GARES ancestors, and Esther's grandfather and my gr-grandfather were brothers. Am hoping to be able to connect with living descendants to share info about this family. Here is what I know about this family -- and I am certainly willing to share additional info on the GARES ancestors. Believe that Clarence B. MANGAS was born NOV 1895 in Jackson Township, Randolph County, Indiana, USA, son of John Wesley MANGAS and Wilda GETTINGER. Married (date unknown) to Esther Reed GARES, born 4 JAN 1896, daughter of Edward GARES and Sarah (Sadie, Sallie) Reed GARES. Edward Gares was the son of F. Amos Bennet/Barnet GARES and Susan Jane KING. If I have found the right people on the SSDI, Clarence died March 1965 and Esther died April 1983. Believed to have had at least 3 daughters - am hoping to connect with them or with their descendants - no idea of whom they married though, so am stuck on this point: (1) Ellen or Helen born about 1917 in Indiana (2) Martha J., born about 1922 in Ohio (3) Virginia J. born about 1926 in Indiana Clarence is listed as farming in Wayne Twp, Randolph Co in 1920 Census, and as Postal Carrier living in Union City, Wayne Twp in 1930. Above info about daughters comes from those census records. Thanks in advance to anyone who recognizes this family and can assist me, or anyone who can point to additional information about them.
