Has anyone on this list heard of these surnames? My 3GGrandfather, Abner Cadwallader and his twin brother Ezra were born in Centerville, IN, in 1842. They subsequently moved back to Ohio. Their father is listed in Quaker records as Joseph Cadwalader. The boys also lived with a Lemuel Lewis, his wife Hannah and a child named John. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Thank you, Gina!! I love reading these!!!! Nancy
Linda, I found these biographies for Lemuel's widow, and his oldest son,on the county history preservation site. It is from A. W Bowen's History book. MARY WIGGINS, the widow of Lemuel Wiggins, was born in Wayne County, Ohio, January 22, 1831, and was the eldest daughter of John and Jane (Moore) Stanley, natives of North Carolina. The father was born in 1801, and was the son of John and Elizabeth Stanley, also natives of North Carolina. Jane Moore was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Moore. Both husband and wife were reared on the farm, and were married about the year 1817, Three children came to bless them: James, a carpenter of Muncie, Indiana; Mary of whom this sketch more particularly pertains, and Louis, a teamster of Montpelier, Indiana. The mother died, and the father married for a second wife Mary Cox, and to this marriage seven children were born: Jehu, Elizabeth, Jane, Morris, Lavina, Anna and John. After his first marriage they located in Henry County, where he owned 160 acres of land, on which he continued to live until the time of his death in 1863. He was buried in Moore's Cemetery, near Blountsville. From a Whig to a Republican embraces the history of his political faith. Mary Stanley (Mrs. Wiggins) lived with her parents in Henry County until the date of her marriage, July 27, 1850, to Lemuel Wiggins, son of John and Nancy (Shultz Wiggins. Four sons and four daughters blessed this household: Lillie O., wife of James Rollins, a contractor of Montpelier; Prentice and John C., carpenters of Muncie; Oliver H., a farmer of this township; Emma J., wife of John T. Burrows, a Trustee of Nettle Creek Township; Mary L, wife of James Johnson, a farmer of Wayne County; Della, wife of March Lindsey, a farmer of Nettle Creek Township, and Otis L., a farmer. Lemuel Wiggins was first married, February 20, 1844, in Hocking County, Ohio, to Anna Sanford, daughter of Herschel Sanford, and by their marriage four children were born: Lauren G. of Losantville, two infants, deceased and Daniel of Muncie. They lived in Ohio for a time and then came to Blountsville, Indiana, where the wife died of cholera in 1849. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and a noble Christian woman, whose rare and excellent qualities made her beloved wherever known. After the marriage of Miss Stanley to Lemuel Wiggins, they engaged in the hotel business at Blountsville, which they followed for two years, and then engaged in the mercantile business at Losantville for three years. They then purchased a farm and operated it for a few years, but returned after a time to the mercantile trade at Losantville. Here he died, September 16, 1885, and was laid to rest at Blountsville. Mr. Wiggins was a more than ordinarily successful man, and at the time of his death was the owner of 600 acres of land. Mrs. Wiggins now resides on a farm of 133 acres. Mr. Wiggins was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Losantville, and had served two full terms as Township Trustee. He was a strong Republican and a pillar of his party in his town. At his death it was justly said that a good man has passed away. Otis Leland Wiggins, a farmer of Nettle Creek Township, is the youngest son of Lemuel and Mary Wiggins, whose biographies appear above. He was born in Nettle Creek Township October 13, 1868, was raised a farmer's boy and acquired a farmer boy's education. He was married September 9, 1891, to Laura B., daughter of Simon and Luzerne (Wine) McCollums, who was born in this county June 3, 1870, and is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Losantville. Otis is a Republican, following in the footsteps of his father. Addendum: Martha Dobson wrote, "I was reading the information about Mary Wiggins on your website. I am her descendant. My grandfather was the Otis L. (L is for Leland) mentioned in the story. I am Martha Jane Wiggins, daughter of Otis L.'s son, Fred. I found it interesting that there was no mention of Lemuel Wiggins' two sons who were half Native American. I remember them from my childhood in Losantville. They were named Laney and Homey. These may have been nicknames. Laney was a farmer in Losantville. Homey was a physician, as was his son George, practicing in New Castle. George was our family doctor. Laney had a daughter named Beadie - I'm not sure about the spelling. She married a man named Brewer and lived in Losantville. The 600 acre family farm, reduced to 80 acres at the end, was sold by my mother, Mary Mitchell Wiggins, to neighbors in 1959 or 1960." LAUREN G. WIGGINS. - As a farmer and businessman, Lauren G. Wiggins stands in the front rank in his township and county. He is a native of Ohio, born in Hocking County, February 20, 1845, and is the eldest son of Lemuel and Anna (Sanford) Wiggins, of whom mention has been made elsewhere. When quite young Lauren G. came with his parents to Hagerstown, Indiana, and from thence to Blountsville, and again to Losantville. He secured an average education and made his home with his father until his marriage. In the latter part of 1863 he enlisted in Company C, Ninth Indiana Cavalry, and served until the close of the war. During his army life he participated in the battles of Nashville, Franklin, Columbia and a number of others of minor importance. He was a good soldier and served his country well and faithfully. He was discharged from service in 1865, and returned home and engaged in farming, and on November 7, 1869, he was married to Orrilla Murry, daughter of Cornelius and Lucinda (Burroughs) Murry. Mrs. Lauren Wiggins was born in Henry County, June 8, 1849. A family of five children has blessed this union: Harland H., a farmer of this township; Eva D., who died at the age of eighteen months; Anna V., at home; Charles O., at home, and Fannie B., also at home. After his marriage, Mr. Wiggins continued farming for six years, at the end of which time he engaged in the mercantile business at Losantville for a short time, when he moved to Blountsville, where he remained two years engaged in trade. In 1876 he resumed farming and followed this occupation until March 1893, when he again moved to Losantville and engaged in horse raising in partnership with Cornelius Hunt. Both he and his wife are members of the Methodist Church, holding their membership at Losantville. Mr. Wiggins is a member of the Masonic order at Blountsville, and a G.A.R. member. In politics he is a Republican, and is a man whose intentions are to keep time and step with the age in which his lot is cast. He made a good and true soldier, and his life as a citizen is equally commendable. I hope these help, Gina ----- Original Message ----- From: "lbhartley" <lbhartley@netdirect.net> To: <INRANDOL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, December 21, 2003 7:17 AM Subject: [INRANDOL] Does anyone have Tucker's book on RC? > Does anyone have Tucker's book on RC? Hello List, I wanted to let everyone know that I have copies of the following cemetery records, Maxville, Buena Vista, Cedar Friends, Huntsville, African Methodist, Cherry Grove, Salem and Poplar Run. I will be adding these to the web site as soon as I can get them done. These were all donated to me by Jeanette Swoveland, Sexton of Maxville/Woodlawn. The Swovelands also own Cherry Grove. I will eventually have copies for Woodlawn also from Jeanette. I have talked with several of the Sexton's and they are all letting me borrow their records. It is just a matter of getting the time to meet with them and then transcribing them. Buena Vista is almost done, it has been causing my word processing software to have fits. And if it keeps acting up, I may be bald before it is complete! <G> Also Jim and Donald Peacock have offered to let me use their records for Jericho and Peacock cemeteries. I want to thank the Peacocks and Swovelands for their help. I added a Randolph County Tidbits page, if you have any interesting photos or bits of history that you would like to add to this page, let me know. http://www.rootsweb.com/~inrandol/Randolph_Count/Tidbitsx.html Ok now for the list of completed cemetery records. Thank you for doing that! Wouldn't I love for someone to find some pictures of some in my family and post them here! Nancy
Does anyone have a Linda Caryer in their family list? I received a photo of her taken in Union City at Williams. It was sent to my grandmother. She and Linda went to school together in Fort Recovery Ohio. Al Worthen
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Marian
Hello All, Billy Baker has now added another partial year to the already huge numbers of obituaries from the Union City Evening Times and the Union City Times-Gazette. This set of pages now covers from June 1934-Dec. 1941, approximately 2,375 obituaries! What a job he has done!! Remember that this newspaper coverage reaches well into Darke County, Ohio as well as covering much of Randolph County. You can now do a keyword search from the Obituaries Information page: http://www.dcoweb.org/randolph/UCobits/index.html Be inventive with your searches. For example, my dad worked at the Backstay Welt Co. in Union City. I searched Backstay and came up with eleven hits - often not the actual decedent but relatives of dad's co-workers. Most were names that I remember and am interested in knowing more about. Now don't say this too loudly, but I've heard that this may be the end of the line for Billy's UC obituary contributions. He told me that he would transcribe from June 1934 (the first microfilmed newspaper) through the end of 1941, which he has now completed. He has certainly earned: 1) a well deserved rest from his labors; and 2) my unending gratitude for transcribing all of these obituaries from our home town! Thanks again Billy! Now kick back in that easy chair!!! --Jane Torres
Thanks Mac. Please tell me again how I can pull these up to look at those cemeteries. Thanks, Nancy
Gina et all, Josephine Clevenger married Paul Hartley. He was a teacher too and both taught school at Muncie Central. Mom and Dad both had them about 1940-41. I think Josephine died between 1962-64, in St Louis, where they lived at that time. Shirley
Hi, I was looking at the Buena Vista entries. I am related to Lees, Higginbothams, Abernathys and Reynards. Would you get in touch with me some way so that we could examine out information and perhaps trade some. I am involved with a large group of Higginbothams from this tree and they would be so delighted for you to share the information you have and so would I. Thanks so much. Linda
aaaaw, shucks. Well, when you get to Josephine, she married a man by the name of Paul Something-Or-Other. I knew them personally and can't think of his name right now but it will come to me. I'll let you know. ----- Original Message ----- From: The Richardson's To: INRANDOL-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, November 22, 2003 8:23 PM Subject: Re: [INRANDOL] Cemetery Listing Shirley, I have Clevenger's in my family, but I haven't gotten all of the different children traced to the 1940's yet to know if she is one of mine. And no worries on the kittens, I know you love cats way too much to do anything to them, I wouldn't put it past you to have all them cats in your house by New Year's <G> Oh and thanks for finally admitting to the tormenting you do <G> Gina ----- Original Message ----- From: "unicorn1945" <unicorn1945@sbcglobal.net> To: <INRANDOL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 22, 2003 7:07 PM Subject: Re: [INRANDOL] Cemetery Listing > I've been looking for the proud owner of a Josephine Clevenger.
