Hello List, This was sent to me by Mary Jo, and I wanted to pass it on to you. I found it interesting. Gina The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500s: These are interesting... Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married. Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children - last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water." Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the dogs, cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying "It's raining cats and dogs." There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could really mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence. The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying "dirt poor." The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on the floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they kept adding more thresh until when you opened the door it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entranceway.Hence the saying a "thresh hold." (Getting quite an education, aren't you?) In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes the stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme, "Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old." Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could "bring home the bacon." They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and "chew the fat." Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning and death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous. Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or "upper crust." Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a "wake." England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a "bone-house" and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they thought they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the "graveyard shift") to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be "saved by the bell" or was considered a "dead ringer." And that's the truth... Now , whoever said that History was boring ! ! ! Educate someone...Share these facts with a friend

----- Original Message ----- From: Shelley Lafayette To: LAFinken@aol.com Sent: Friday, January 30, 2004 5:30 PM Subject: Roots message Board I have been a target of this new "worm" this week, along with so many others. Thank goodness that I have Norton Anti-virus and Internet Protection! I am warned that an attempt has been made to get into my computer, and the message is deleted. I have found that these messages come in pairs however, several minutes apart. The first is intercepted and deleted and I am informed of the attempt. The next one comes along and is not stopped, the computer thinks that was already deleted. However the first attempt gives me the subject line and sender information, so I know who to look for, and I can delete that one, too. The scarey thing was that one of the 11 pairs yesterday said that it was from roots-web! Ithink that the worm raided someone's address file and was able to make that connection. That just hit a little too close to home! However these worm all have attachments that must be opened to infect. The only way that I knew about this infection was because I saw the deleted Subject line first. So be sure who the e-mail is really from! Shelley mamabear@hotellafayette.com

Hello List, I wanted to send you the link to the Rootsweb help page that has information about the problem with AOL and the virus that is being passed around. Rootsweb says virus' can not be passed through the mailing list. But if you have several people on the list in your address book they can be sent that way. The virus will send itself to people in your contact list. For more information on the email problems and the virus go to the following link. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help.cgi I am trying to contact AOL but have been on hold for the past 15 minutes so far. Ahh Finally they got to me, they have rootsweb on the whitelist, and are waiting for Rootsweb to give them a feedback isp, and until they get that and everything is in place the AOL users will not receive email. I know I am receiving errors for the CS.COM users also. But have not seen anything posted on them yet. I will try and figure out what is going on there. I tried to contact all the people that I have been receiving errors for, to let them know what is going on. Hopefully everything is back to normal soon. If you have a list member that is in contact with you but can't get to the list mail, please forward them on to them. Sorry for all the trouble everyone! Based on my recent personal experience I would highly recommend that you drop AOL ASAP and switch to anybody else. They are quite proficient at arbitrarily making decisions like the one you describe. Also, If you do drop AOL make sure you keep the letter they send you in the mail. After I had dropped them I started getting billed again about two months later and the only thing they'll accept as proof is the letter they sent. When I contacted my bank about these charges they told me they get similar complaints about AOL almost daily basis. -----Original Message----- From: LAFinken@aol.com [mailto:LAFinken@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, January 29, 2004 4:58 PM To: INRANDOL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [INRANDOL] message board problems this is what I was given to explain Lindsey, I am on another list and this was discussed there. Hopefully this explains the problem for you Joyce Dear List Administrator, I have not received any mail from the rootsweb mail list for the past several days. I called the AOL Postmaster at 1-888-212-5537 to find out why this was happening. They told me that because of a flood of complaints from AOL members that they, the AOL members were receiving so much spam with their mailing list email, AOL shut down all the email going to AOL members. I was not one of the ones who complained and I have not had any problems with receiving spam with my rootsweb mail lists, I knew nothing about this. The AOL Postmaster told me that the only way this problem could be solved was that each List Administrator must contact the AOL Postmaster at the this phone number 1-888-212-5537 in order to solve this problem. Is anyone else out there not receiving emails this week from the boards from Rootsweb. I must be on at least 10 of them and I sent queries this week and haven't even gotten the automated response one back to my own queries.
