    1. [INRANDOL] Old Union City Memory
    2. Billy J. Baker
    3. Old Memories by Don C. Ward, published March 1938 One of the first of the Sousa marches to come into general use in the Union City community was the "Manhattan Beach" which was played by the Muncie Band at the funeral services for Gov. I. P. Gray, most famous Union City resident, in Feb. 1895. Gov. Gray had died in Mexico City while serving as Minister to Mexico, and his body was brought back to his old home for burial. The funeral services were held in the Union Grand Theater where admission was by ticket only. Hundreds were unable to enter the theater, but all joined in the solemn march to the City Cemetery. The Muncie Band, which filled muddy Oak street almost from curb to curb, played Sousa's new "Manhattan Beach" March on the way to the cemetery. As I recall, the band repeated the march. The effect of the beautifully solemn strains, with the high funeral car drawn by several horses, with the State Militia, the state officials headed by the Governor and his staff, county and local officials, and citizens from a wide territory, was one never to be forgotten.

    3. I have a copy of the local newspaper obit of Benjamin Hodson. It was in the Dec 15, 1937 Winchester paper. He died at a daughter's home in Connersville. Other survivors are 1 son, W. O. Hodson; 4 brothers, Wm of Carlos, S. L. of Modoc, Levi of Modoc and Milton; a sister, Mrs Etta Chamness of Carlos, 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. It appears to me only 3 brothers were named? Austin Cox --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus]

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Bk.2ADE/1546 Message Board Post: Does anyone have knowledge of an Apostolic Church in Winchester in the 1940-1950's time period ? If so does it still exist and where could I find records for this Church. In search of baptismal records of at least 7 children between those years. Thank you for any help.

    2. I got your response. I believe you are right, that this Benjamin Hodson is my grandfather. I have no birth or death information to substantiate this. I do know that Benjamin is buried at Buena Vista Cemetery near Winchester, and that there is a Joshua Hodson buried at the Union Chapel Cemetery just West of Carlos. Joshua lived from 1833 to 1890 according to the cemetery records. That would make him the right age to be Benjamin's father. If we are going by the census data would have put his birth date around 1861. At the time of the 1880 census, Joshua would have been 46 so the birth date is right....if the census was taken before his 47th birthday. I plan a trip to Indiana late summer early fall to check out these sites and visit other relatives. Thanks for your response.

    3. Thank you for your extensive coverage of Randolph County resources. I am planning a research trip to Winchester this spring and your detail helps to organize my research more efficiently. My ancestors are Platt, Robbins, Davis, Derevage, Keys, Glover, and more, most in Washington and Greensfork Twps. Most have births prior to 1882 when birth records were officially filed. Is there a possibility that births were listed in the newspapers of the county prior to 1882? Are there any other sources of births if cemetery tombstones list only birth year? Thanks for your help! 3. For those who might have missed this news item or even might have personally known this Randolph County man: Davey Marlin-Jones, 71, of Las Vegas, born May 8, 1932, in Winchester, Indiana, passed away quietly at home on Tuesday, March 2, 2004. He died of colon cancer. He was born to Quaker parents with a relentless work ethic. He became interested in theater after seeing a magic show at age 8, and when he was 13, his father, Marlin Jones, gave him a magic set. Davey [David] was found to be a natural performer. He was a graduate of Antioch College and acted with a nearby Shakespearean repertory company. He preferred directing to acting.. About that time, he also worked in television, driving more than 100 miles to Columbus from college. He was "Captain Davey Jones, Skipper of the Good Ship Columbus," and his co-star was a giraffe. He spent his life working in the professional theatre, wearing the many hats of magician, actor, playwright, producer, critic, and director. For the last fifteen years, he was a professor of theatre and playwriting at the University of Nevada, at Las Vegas (UNLV). Prior to moving to Las Vegas, Mr. Marlin-Jones lived in Washington, DC and was arts critic for CBS affiliate WTOP/WDVM/WUSA, Channel 9, from 1970 to 1987 and also for NBC affiliate Post/Newsweek Television, WDIV, in Detroit from 1979 to 1987. His lively reviews of movies and plays were performances in themselves. His stated philosophy was that, “If a critic is really doing his job, he can show you that there is a whole rich world (of the performing arts) out there that you can enjoy; he can explain the production elements that made for a good time, and if you’re not having a good time, he can explain why and hopefully it helps and hopefully you can make better choices in what you see and have a better time.” His marriages to Jane Jones and Mary Jones ended in divorce. Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Maggie Winn-Jones of Las Vegas; two sons from his second marriage, Andrew Jones of Davis, Calif., and Oliver Jones of Los Angeles; a sister, Sharon Meachum of Norfolk; and two grandchildren.

    3. Hi all. I was in Preble Co., OH today researching for a client. On my way back to home to Jay Co. I stopped at a cemetery on highway 27 at the cross road for Snow Hill. I don't know the name of the cemetery. I'm sure several folks on the list know the name. Anyway, I stopped there (for no apparent reason. lol) and photographed several of the older stones in the cemetery. 2. Wow! What a lot of information! Regarding the old cemetery books: sounds like a huge job, but oh, how valuable it will be! If it were me doing it, I would take my little tape-recorder and read the books into the recorder, spelling out all the questionable words and names, and take it home and transcribe them. I did that one time when I was reading old obituaries from a newspaper. Don't know if that is possible - only a suggestion. Nancy
